I was driving the car hard one day and after later when I parked and tried to pull out i realised the power steering had cut out but once I reved the engine another 500rpm it was fine.

so basically now once the car heats up and is only idling the power sterring is practically off, once i rev i just a bit it's fine, it fine when i first start the car and it's cold. Could i trown something off in the power steering pump or the sensor in the power sterring pump.

2001 GAGT1 Variable power steerin assit.

Thanks for your time and ideas guys!

My car does that too. At idle, I have absolutely no power steering.

Which problem do you have? Is it a bad pump or too low of a idle speed?

bad pump; idle speed is fine; gonna try and score one @ a junk yard for under $100

Autozone with lifetime warranty is 90 bucks....

Definantly the pump, I had mine replaced under warranty for the same reason. I got another one used for $75 CDN resivoir and all when the shaft cracked off after the warranty was up.

They are very easy to install yourself, remove the passenger side engine mount and remove the belt. losen the 2 lines comming into the pump, then there are 3 bolts to remove (look at the replacement pump for their locations. Rotate the pully to line up the large hole with the bolts to remove them one at a time.

Installation is same as reverse, except you have to fill the resivior and bleed the system by running the car and turning wheel lock to lock repeatedly and check fluid level while doing so.

ACTION: I looked online and the Autozone's in my area also carry the pump for 75/50 (w/ - w/o reservoir) but the site doesnt specify wether the pump has variable rate NV7 or not NV40, can you verify?
