I posted a question about winter tires a couple of weeks ago and someone said to check out tirerack for inexpensive prices. Well I guess I should have said CHEAP tires cause I really want to get dirt cheap prices.

I have the stock 16" wheels on my 1999 GAGT and wondered what sizes for a winter tire I can use with them. I figure the smaller the size I can fit on them the cheaper it will be.

Any suggestions?

I don't know about you but what I am doing this winter is getting slightly used tires from one of the 3 used tires places around here. Last year my friend got 4 used Blizzak WS-15's with 80% of its tread left on them for just $20 per tire. That is a way better deal than I would ever expect to come across myself, especially since winter tires are generally a little bit of a challenge to come by at used tire places.

If you want to go used tire shopping make sure you inspect the tire very well, for holes, repairs(plugs), sidewall damage, or bead area damage, etc. to make sure that you arent getting a beaten tire. Do not forget to bring a tire depth guage with you to make sure you are buying a tire with some decent tread for the amount of money you want to pay.

Yeah used tires would be a good way to go, but there aren't any around here that I know of.

Wrong section. There's a section for tires/suspension. Also see the sticky in there for a great tire calculator.

205/55/16's should fit the stock 16 inch GA wheel, or so I've been told. I'm picking up a set used from another dude here this weekend, so lets hope I've been told right! ;)

If you put that size tire on the stock wheel, it would differ by over 7% from the stock tires!! Your speedometer would read 60 mph but you would be doing 64.3 mph.

Thanks, but NO SALE!!

you can get away with 195/65R15 but the amount you save on the tires will be spent on rims. I am planing on doing this this winter. I figure that it costs about the same as the stock 225/50R16 tires when you include the price of steel rims, but it will be very easy to change between winter and summer tires in the future and you will not have to pay for installation and balancing of your tires every spring and fall. In the long run you will save money.

Plus the thinner tires (195) will cut through snow better than the stock 225 size tires so they will perform better in winter.
