I just had my 2004 GAGT (automatic) dropped off because my transmission is slipping from a standstill. Basically if you are stopped and take your foot off the brake and press the gas sometimes the gears do not catch and the Trans slams pretty hard into gear.

Anyways, the next day I got a call saying I could pick the car up. The other problems I was having were fixed (wheel balance, window falling out of rails) but before I even left the parking lot I felt the 'slip' again. I turned around and told the service manager it had not been fixed. He had a mechanic get into the car with me and had me try to repeat the situation. I expected it to not do it again but received the opposite. It did it 5 times in a row. The mechanic said, "That is because your transmissions clutch times are not programmed exactly right but that is a problem a lot of Grand AM's seem to have. All I can do is tell you that the VEHICLE IS PERFORMING AS DESIGNED"

So are they telling me that GM vehicles are designed to have a POS transmission???????? I have the invoice from the warranty repairs that I am copying and mailing to GM that says "ABNORMAL SHIFTING FOUND 0 MPH - 10 MPH", "NO REPAIR NEEDED", "VEHICLE OPERATING AS DESIGNED".

I get a GMS Discount (employee discount) and even though I only paid $16,800 for a 04 GAGT fully loaded (about $18,500 after interest and the other taxes/fees for titling) and I don't think I should have bought the damn thing now. I have had 2 major problems since July and both times it seems like they don't want to fix it or just don't know how to. Us people from Detroit usually don't buy foreign cars (actually your neighborhood disowns you if you do) but my two friends here in DC (Toyota Tundra and Subaru Outback) have had no problems what so ever.

Guess it's just luck ... you can see why I don't go to casinos ... :violin

I had the same problem last Friday (car has been at the dealers since Monday morning) only it wouldn't go into reverse, except at a 3800rpm slam.
Needless to say the service manager told me I need a new tranny, (he said it "imploded"???) new one came in today, (4 days to ship a new one?) hopefully it will be done before the weekend, as I'm going to Coleman Mi to get my SD hood from Jakhammer.

I've heard a few instances where transmission problems on brand new cars was because of a faulty transmission learn, which could be happening right now.

Try resetting the PCM by pulling the negative battery terminal and putting it back on.
There are a few PCM-related problems that people come across when they get confused, I am not 100% sure on if this is causing problems for you or not but it really can't hurt.

If any of the above suggestions don't work, talk to the service manager again and ask him to contact the Technical Assistance Center (TAC if he doesn't recognize the full name). TAC can give technicians fixes for a problem that aren't even published yet.

I'll check bulletins/PIs for you right now, though.

I had my tranny rebuilt under warranty and its been fantastic ever since. I'd go so far as to say its the best shifting tranny in a car I've ever owned. It shifts quick, firm and without delay.

Your tranny is definantly not working right, take it to another dealer that has provided better training to their employees.

If this trait is not found in all grand ams, then yours is certainly not "operating as designed"!!!!!

Thanks everyone, I will be going to a different dealership monday morning. On top of this problem I had a new buddle of joy come across tonight. When I went to start my car, the second the engine fired ... it stalled. It did this 4 times total before it started. When it finally started the Service Engine Soon light and the TRAC OFF lights came on and a bell sounded about 4 times. The lights stayed on until I shut the car off and turned it back on. The car started the next time but now it seems like it was going to stall again. The RPMs were going down around 500 (yes, five hundred) while in Park and the lights started to dim.

Go old GM's ... here I am tryin to tell everyone I work with that american cars are worth the money. If this keeps up you are going to see me trade this thing in for a foreign (non-asian) car.

I'll post here when I find out what is going on now ...
