Anyone here using Castrol (made in Germany) Syntec 0W30 synthetic motor oil ?
Note: this is NOT the North American made (older) version of Castrol Syntec 0W30 that is for winter use.

I am thinking of maybe switching from Mobil 1 to this year-around (now that there seems to be a steady local source) & wanted people's opinion.

This is an European formula oil that is made in Germany.
It is a PAO based real 'synthetic' motor oil.
Factory-fill for European BMW's (except for the M-series).
Factory-fill for Audi A4's with the 1.8T engine.
(Is similarly rated to Mobil 1 0W40 synthetic motor oil)
ACEA A3 rated.
VW 502 00, 505 00, 503 01 rated.
MB 229.1, 229.3 rated.
BMW LongLife-'01 rated.
Porsche approved (their factory-fill is Mobil 1 0W40 synthetic motor oil )

This 0W30 oil is borderline shy (almost) of a 40-weight oil in thickness when hot; but allows for unaided engine starts down to -40F/C.

Some people with LS-1 engines have really liked this oil & have shown good Used Oil Analysis'.
For example: 5000 miles on Castrol (made in Germany) Syntec 0W30 oil in a '98 Corvette (http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=001975)

I'm using GC (German Castrol) in my 2002 Grand Am GT as well as my 1999 Olds Silhouette (with the same 3.4L engine). I have only used the GC for 1 interval in each and have not noticed any negative effects. On the other hand I haven't really noticed any positive effects. Before the GC I've taken both vehicles to oil change places and put in whatever bulk 5W30 they had.

I'm not going to continue with the GC because I've found a full synthetic Esso brand 0W30 available in Canada for almost half as much money.

If you want more info on GC check out www.bobistheoilguy.com and go to the forums there.

Here in Canada you can sometimes find it in Canadian Tire (more often now that Cdn Tire has added it to their line-up of oils, they also added Red Line & Amsoil oil) & Walmart.
I've read in the US: try Autozone, but it does not appear to be national widely available.

Make sure if you are going to get Made in Germany - Castrol Syntec 0W30, that you read the back label.
It must say: "MADE IN GERMANY", "...European formula specially formulated to meet the needs of high performance engines" & have the ratings like: ACEA A3, BMW Longlife-01 rating, etc...

Here it sells for like $7.12-$7.49Cdn/1L bottle [$5.86-$6.17US/1L bottle]; the same price range as Mobil 1 5W30, 10W30 & 15W50 oil.
But we current have a sale this week at $6.74Cdn/1L bottle [$5.55US/1L bottle]
I have read that Autozone usually sells it for $3.99-$4.99US/1-US Quart bottle.

If you want to compare Made in Germany - Castrol Syntec 0W30 to Mobil 1, compare it to the Mobil 1 0W40 (http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENPVLMOMobil1_0W-40.asp).
But Mobil 1 0W40 is not easy to find here at a reasonable price.
You can probably find Mobil 1 0W40 at a Porsche or Mercedes dealership; but it would probably be over-priced & marked-up like a Pontiac dealership that charges $11Cdn/1L bottle of Mobil 1 5W30, that you can buy in Walmart of $7.xxCdn/1L bottle.
Or buy it directly from the local Mobil 1 distributor at near full retail price (no discounts/sales) by the case of 6x1L bottles.

This is the reply I recently (Dec 08) received from Castrol USA about the GC 0W-30 oil:

Thank you for contacting Castrol North America.

Castrol SYNTEC 0W-30 is a Group IV PAO based oil.
The product is made in and imported from Germany.
When most people in the U.S. discuss "German Castrol"
they are referring to Castrol SYNTEC 0W-30 because this product is made in
Germany.
This product can be further distinguished by the call-out on the front
label, which says "European Formula."

Thank you again for your interest in Castrol, The Technology Leader!
