Hey

I have heard alot about the LIM leaking after a while on the 3400's. I have done some extensive searches on this subject, and somewhere i read that this problem has been fixed in the newer models of GA's. Sometime in 03 i think. Has anyone else heard this? I can't seem to find this artical again to confirm my memory.

If i remember right it said something that the LIM gasket has been redesigned and has fixed the problem with the LIM leaking. I don't have this problem, but i was just wondering about this and if i still have to keep an eye on it. My car is a 04, bought in August, and Manufactured May 21,2004.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Or if anyone has read that artical and know where i can find it, that would be great too.
Thanks
Scott

It was redesigned, however, one member had the new gasket fail within 5k miles. I don't know the exact thread, but it is here somewhere.

Yeah, ive seen a few 2k3 + GA's have the problem. Just dont seem as common yet. We just gotta wait till they rack up more miles on their cars and then we'll see how GM did :)

How bad do they leak? Can something like "barrs Stop leak" fix it?.. or atleast fix it temporarily?

nope. The gasket itself seperates and the pressure on the coolant system pushed it away.

Barrs stop leak is like duct tape. It doesn't fix anything, just postpones the inevitable.

When I had mine done at 89,000 KMS the dealer said that the new ones are way better and that it usually never happens again with them.

Too bad about the 5k one though :(

I have a 99 GA GT. I am just starting to tackle replacing my LIM tonight. Judging from this thread, the common knowledge suggests that the LIM Gasket has been redesigned since 1999.

My questions is this: I will get the updated gasket design when I order my parts from GM, right? Does anyone know the part number of the updated Gasket Kit, so the GM Parts guy has no chance to mess up the order?

You -will- get the updated gasket when you order from the dealer. The older style isn't even in stock now. Matter of fact I didn't see any of the old style gaskets after the new ones came out. That change was immedeate.

On another note, after replacing LIM gaskets on both 3100s and 3400s with both old and new style gaskets, I haven't seen one come back for a coolant leak. There could be many reasons for this.. but I think the main reason is the attention to detail during the install.

The Gasket Kit (89017279) includes the both sides of the LIM Gasket, and the Upper Intake Gaskets (see Pic).

You will also need:
EGR Gasket - 24506439
EGR Gasket - 10241048
(2) Valve Cover Gaskets - 10154775
O-Ring, Distributor Shaft Seal - 10477565

I am also doing changing my thermostat (dont think you need these if you dont)
O-Ring, Thermostat Bypass Pipe Adapter - 10189205
O-Ring, Heater Inlet Pipe - 24504709

For just the LIM repair parts, the cost was about $142 CDN plus taxes. It added another $31 for the Thermostat replacement and the seals for it.

I hope that is all I will need, cause that is all I have sitting in front of me :)

I am about to take off the intake, and put in my new gasket.

However, I have a stupid question.... The new gasket has a rubber seal, with a tiny rib that looks like it might be designed to seal without any gasket sealant. Is that the case, or do I have to use Gasket Sealant as I would on a traditional gasket?

Thanks for helping out a first timer :)

Sorry to bump and old thread, but I wanted to verify these are the right part numbers. I ordered these from Pace Parts (www.paceparts.com)...genuine GM parts. Anyway, the EGR gasket (sorry don't know which one, they're not here with me) was not the correct one.

It had a round hole in the center somewhat above the holes for the bolts. The one off my sisters '02 had a rectangular hole. My '01 looks to be the same.

Are we sure these are the right pn's? I'm sure others have used them and they must've been right...all I know is the ones I got (styled as above) are not correct.

I ended up reusing the old EGR gasket for the time being. It was in good shape...no apparent problems.

Also the second one I didn't even use...I guess if I removed the EGR valve I might've needed it but I just took it off the UIM and moved it out of the way. So I can't comment if it's the right one or not.

BTW the only place you need RTV gasket maker is on the bottom area between the heads on either side...just lay a nice bead of RTV before setting the LIM down. You don't need any on the new lim gaskets, and they actually clip into the heads so it's a no-brainer.

I have a 2003 GAGT SC/T and I had the LIM replaced at 20,000 miles......it ****ed me off cause I thought GM had fixed it....NOPE.....apparently the 96 Achieva wasnt the last LIM experience for me. Under warranty though BUT I still dont trust it....I dont think the problem is fixed....just a better version of Bars Leak......a gasket version of it....I am gonna have them check it again at 35,900 miles before the warranty goes.

My main question at this point is for those who have done this to verify the part numbers for the EGR gaskets and see if they were the right gaskets. If not, did the EGR change and when. The '01 and '02 I checked had the same EGR gasket and were NOT any of the ones listed above.

I'll survive, I'll make do, but if this is the wrong part # I'd hate to see others with the wrong part.

Do you know the date your car was built? In my research on the LIM gasket it was last redesigned sometime in 2003. There for if your car was built in the last half of 2002 or the begining of 2003 it probably wasn't fixed in the build. 2003 GA build dates were from August of 2002 - June of 2003.

My 2004 was built on May 21, 2004 they quit production on the 04s June 11, of 2004. I was told by GM that i do have the redesigned LIM gasket. So we'll just have to see when i get some miles on it if it holds true.
