Anyone have this problem?

I was driving my 2000 Grand AM GT Coupe. My fuel gage showed that it was almost empty. As I was driving, it went back up to almost 1/4 full so I thought I could go a little longer. The fuel light never went on. All of a sudden I was out of gas. Fuel gage still showing 1/4 full. After I called AAA and got more gas, the car started again. I went and filled up and fuel gage went back up to the "F". I'm keeping track of my millage and going to see if it does it again. It's wierd how it was showing almost empty and then went up to 1/4 full but really wasn't. Please advise if you experienced and/or if you know what is wrong.

Never happened to me, but do you have overlays? I have them and when it gets really cold out the start to curl and the needle gets stuck sometimes.

Yup, common problem on GA's & some GM vehicles.

See: Fuel Level Sensor (http://www.grandamgt.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14550&page=1&pp=20)
& see the Toronto Star newspaper article that is in page 2 of that thread:
from: Toronto Star newspaper, Saturday, Dec 20, '03: Why the fuel gauges in GM cars don't always work. Company has part that can fix problem. Ottawa says gauges don't pose a risk. Try using a total fuel system cleaner (not just an fuel injector cleaner) in the gas tank.
I know it has worked for me the last 2-springs, when my full gauge started acting up again.
After a few gas tanks later, my gas gauge return to normal operation.
