I am considering getting a newer 99+ grand am. My fiance has one and i like the way they look but as with any car I own I will want to mod it... I don't know if anyone else has read the article in High Performance Pontiac, but they say that with cold air intake, SLP exhaust and minimal weight reduction they ran 15.0 flat on a good day in the high 50's I was thinking that with those same mods and and underdrive pulley and more weight reduction I could have a car that can (theoritically) run in the 14's but after searching around on the forum it doesn't seem to be the case... anyhoo, I'm not gonna spend upwards of $10,000 on a car and mods if I can't get in into the 14's, I'll just keep modding fieros (no bashing) and have a car that will get there for 1/3 to 1/4 the cost... any info is appricieated, as I would really like to have a newer car to work on and I am somewhat familiar with the 60 degree v6 engines... thanks again

There are quite a few members on here who have their GA's well into the 14's without $10,000 worth of mods. I'm sure they'll chime in soon enough.

i ran a 15.6 all stock, early last summer :driving:

with a few mods I could probably hit 14s

There is a lot of GA that have gone 15.3 stock. If you get CAI, Headers, Exhuast, and a PCM 14s are attainable. You will have a better shot with some heads and ported UIM/LIM since the top end on the GA sucks because of valve float.

With some weight reduction it helps quite a bit, if you have leather, and a sunroof the car will weigh more than if it didn't. I ran a good 300lbs heavier than a some other peeps here *Joe*cough lol If you can get the vehicle weight down to 3000 lbs with you in it, it will be slightly quicker than most :)

14s isn't really that fast. 14 flat, yes, 14.6-14.9, no.

^^^ The man has a point, but if you want it into the 14s regaurdless if its high or low 14s you don't have to use forced induction or spend a ton of money.

I dont think he meant spend $10,000 on mods, he meant ten grand on a car and mods total to run 14s.

Ahh yup, I just reread his post...can still get into the 14's though without a crazy amount of money invested.

You can pick up a low mileage 99 (for the age, 75k is low mileage) for 6k and that leaves you 4k to play with on it :)

Yea, like somebody else said, headers ($900 by the time you install them w/ downpipe and highflow cat), SLP exhaust ($450 shipped, or less), CAI ($150), and a DHP PCM ($215) and you should see under 15.0 on most GA's. So for around $1700 you should be able to hit in the 14's. Like somebody else said, head work goes a long way with the other mods listed. So you find a GA with 50k on it for $6,000 and you've got plenty of money to do all kinds of work and be in the mid 14's.

Funny, H.O. Driver, we both called for a used GA at $6000 and $4000 for mods...

If you really don't care for looks you might want to get a 97-03 used Grand Prix GTP to hit 14's or faster. My friend ran 14.8 with just an intake. But I think a lot of people here will agree with you that Grand AM is a better looking car.

buy a GTP! nough said!

I have a mid-high 14 second Grand Am.... and a stock GTP.

this GTP is looking nicer everyday!

he GTP has much better low end than the GAGT... but the GAGT is better up top.... thanks to tons of money in mods!

next week the GTP will be running circles around the GAGT... and for only 1k in mods!

Yea, factory freak! Headers are needed to get most N-bodies into 14's all motor.

With him in the hot seat his car tips the scales at ~2900lbs, I weigh the same as him and my car weighs in at 3300lbs :(

Thanks for the info... and from what I understand the Grand Prix doesn't handle too well, i want a car that is fun to drive in more than just a straight line... and when I look to buy one I will defineatly look for the least amount of options posssible, leather is too cold in the winter and with a sunroof the sun just shines in my eyes, I don't really care for anything but a cd player and a louder exhaust... thanks again

Grand Am definitely handles better. Grand Prix is more of a luxoury type ride. Pontiac made Grand AM geared for younger generation. But what they didn't know is that some young people would buy Grand Prix because that factory supercharged motor is easier to play with.

I kick my suff in the ass, Could of had a 03 program Grand prix gt, for 1k less then what i got the GA, sure its not supercharged but i could of used the 1k for mods, PLus it was Black which turns me off. O well im happy with my GA, Its all show right now anyway.

All those MODS are great guys except your missing a important detail? How about a gear swap 3.05 gears only do so much.On those vehicles equipped. Which some have said with 4 doors. Makes car heavier. Than a coupe.I have been to enough drags with the pros to know.Balance the engine to the axle & weight ratio. Its a science. You need to Dyno to see where your car stands as stock and see where your cars strong points are verses week . Than work on what to modify. So your wallet can still feed you .Some throw on parts just do not work as you may think . Because you have to combine with another part to get results. I'm new to forum but not to the street rods.Hello and catch ya later. Good luck.

Depends in what though.....I was smoking some last gen GTP's pretty solidly in SCCA autocross this summer here in Las Vegas..and they had springs wheels, tires etc...PLUS motor bolt ons. My ONLY mod was a sway bar....still on RSA's that don't stick too! My friend brought his brand new gen GTP...the new style and I still beat him by 1.5 sec.

With springs and tires I would have trounced them all...NO question.

Pontiac keeps calling "Widetrack" Grand Prix, but really, how much is it wider?

GaRedCoupe
02-07-2005, 06:16 PM
Widetrack was a marketing ploy brought out in the 60's and 70's to sell more cars. Kinda like the Ram Air in the GAGT.

uh.... ebay!

No way I would risk anything over 100 bucks on EBAY. If I can't drive it for myself to find out if anything is wrong with it then I won't even bother getting it.

my GTP out handles my GAGT...... end of comment!

and it is 700 lbs heavier!

only issue is the nose dives more on hard breaking. yet corners are much better!

it just sounds like you drive better than your GTP counterparts!

I gotta go w/ Chris on this one, there is no way a GTP will outhandle a GA on an autocross. Not a prayer. I drive better than most of my driving counterparts on the road, and I could probably switch my GA w/ there GTP and still not get as good a time in their GTP as I could in my GA. I'm not knocking the GTP's handling, its decent, but the extra weight and length are only going to hurt it in an autocross situation. Of course, you won't catch my GA hanging w/ one in a straight line....

2003SCT
02-08-2005, 04:04 PM
Yes.....the weight makes them less tossable AND the length seemed to be one of the worst things for them....they would have to crank it damn hard to get around the tightest areas where I didnt have to do it SO hard. On a fast autcross I bet the power would help make up for it.

Cold Air Intake helps give u more Hp. How much usually between 190-200+ depending. Most people here have either Dr speed or Apoc, so some have custom made them.
