If i remember, its to direct air up thru the radiator.

It deflects air up into the radiator and A/C condensor. Some will say it's okay to remove, but GM would not have put it there if it was unnecessary.

Holy cow that is expensive. I live in Canada and I got mine for 250 CDN. (Intrax) Sprint are even cheaper.

And yes, you'll scrape it, I do it all the time, its still there. (Well, except that peice that the snowbank took) But its flexible.

$507.00 canadian = $411.32 US
$250.00 canadion = $202.82 US

Thats cheaper than I thought it would be for the parts. About how much is it to install? Or is the install pretty easy if I were to do it myself?

I heard it was some kind of radiator support or something

that is your air dam, it is actually made to deflect air down and reduce underbody drag, therefore improving gas mileage. you can remove it if you want to

That's what I thought it was.

My dealer didn't know exactly what it's funtion was, but said it wouldn't hurt anything if you removed it.

Mine was stolen, or broken off, or something. Haven't had it in over a year. Too expensive to replace.

panacea:

how much did they quote you? Someone on here said it was $60. Is this what your dealer said too?

The piece I was looking for was like $30 or something. I don't know if that's just for the center piece, or if that came with the sides too.

is it just me, or is there a lot of GA's with the center piece missing?? I see a lot, and mine just fell off too after driving though some deep snow

good call

why would GM worry about underbody drag on a grand am?

I asked my dad, who is a project engineer at GM, about the purpose of this piece and he said that was the reason they put it on. if you look at other GM cars they also have this under the bumper. and why would you need to direct air up to your radiator when the front fascia has a large opening in it that allows air to directly hit it? plus the air dam is angled back, which would direct air down, not up. it would need to be angled forward to effectively direct air up

looks straight up and down to me. anyways... i dont know personally what it's purpose is but it seems more accurate that it would direct air up into the compartment and not down. i doubt gm engineers had air drag in mind when designing the grand am, or any other non-performance vehicle.

I understand what you are saying and I agree that it sounds ridiculous to worry about drag on a Saturn or something like that, but I am in no position to argue with someone who has worked for 30 years at GM

You might not, but there are tons of people on here that swear they know more than GM engineers. Hell, I'm sure these same people would argue with a NASA scientist.

I got my Intrax from Summit Racing, and got my ST springs from a friend.

It took me and a friend under 1 hour to swap out all 4 springs.

the peice ur talking about is a air dam ,and also a bottom radiator support bracket, u could cut the plastic off,but leave the metal on top alone,or else ur radiator will fall.I know i replaced mine.

DjSylentMystyk

So if the plastic is cracked but still hanging on it will still be ok?

Joker694

yes

DjSylentMystyk
04-19-2005, 12:51 PM
better check that metal thing then.... I would think that if you kept replacing this air dam it would keep breaking off whenever you hit a small speed hump to fast.... Am I right?

the center is a piece of cake to remove, or rip off, whatever, but the sides are actually connected in one piece to the inner fender splash guard. The only way to remove that is to cut it off. this shouldn't be too hard since it's only plastic.
