My guess is that the heat of the engine would be too much for the neon tubes...Sweet idea though, and would look good at night, but I mean, not a really visibile mod unless your parked with your hood up.

nah...as long as the tubes aren't visible, it's legal (in most states) to have green neon...

Streetglow gold series have lexan cases which don't absorb heat (which is why so many people here made boxes for their WAI's out of it before teh CAI's became popular.) Just keep wiring away from exhaust manifolds and moving parts and this should work.
Check local laws with regards to neon light legality, most states are different. Here in Newfoundland Canada, any colour neon is acceptable under the car, but you cannot have red noens on the roof. It is Ok to have green, purple or yellow on the roof though!
I wouldn't do the neons. There's no reason to be popping the hood on a stock 4 cylinder anyway.
