You mean to re-thread the hole for the drain bolt?

you'd just need a tap and die set

(edit: This is for a 1999+ 3400, so it may vary with a 1997, I'm pretty sure it is similiar though)

For a new hole? Like for an oil return line? If that is the case, you have to remove the pan, drill the hole, tap it, reinstall the pan. So drill, drill bits, tap & die set, jack stands, jack, engine support fixture, torque wrenchs, tools required for oil change, 4.5 quarters of new oil. I think that is about it.

The cradle has to come out to remove to oil pan.

The passenger side only has to be dropped in order to remove it. There is another way to do it with a punch type of system, but I cant think of it off hand. My buddy does it quite a bit on the cars he does.

I thought you couldn't punch aluminum pans(Not sure why but I've read 100 times not to punch aluminum pans)? Does the 97 aluminum pan?

You Can Go To Auto Zone, Advance Just About Any Parts Store And Get An Over Sized Drain Plug It Will Tap And Make Its Own Threads.

If I'm not mistaken it has to be above the oil line.

alright... so anywhere above the oil line... does anyone have pictures of where this would best be drilled?

There is a picture from someone on here, I'll find it, they had a flange welded in, but its the same place. Let me find it and I'll edit this post.

This was a thread that I was posting in, when I was researching a supercharger install.

Drill, Tap, (and maybe some teflone )should do... Provide the wholes are the size of your fittings you won't have any problems...

Here is another article I read when I was going to do this, They say don't drill, but what they mean is don't drill while it is on the car, take the pan off, drill, clean the shavings out...

Some people drill or tap and use grease in the flutes to catch the shavings but if you ask me that is a crazy risk to take.

Good luck!
