View Full Version : Rear Brake Drum Repair

I just finished changing front brakes and rotors and looked at rears. I have never changed GM rear brake shoes and would like to give it a try. Do not feel like forking over $$$$. Upon taking off drums....after a few hard bangs with mallet they came off.

Question, hopefully someone can answer, do you need to remove hub bearing assembly or do you leave on and work around. It seems to me it would be a lot easier to remove but I do not want to screw up rear end. There is also a star (torx) nut holding ...I quess shoe holddown bracket, it does'nt look like the old pin clip style typically used to hold. What size of torx siocket is needed.

Could someone offer advice, maybe instructions with photos would be really great!

Work around the bearing. If you want to take the bearing off, it is a T-47. I work around the bearing. Take the drum off and just do one side at a time. It may take a few hours to do them but be patient and take your time. Use the other side as a guide.
