This is odd, a army buddy of mine told me that the Hummer was originally made by jeep for millitary use but the company was bought out by GM. So wouldnt the grille style actually have come from jeep influence?

Hummers are built by AM General. GM bought the rights to the Hummer name, and both companies helped design the H2.

I also think the AM General Hummer uses a GM gas engine, and maybe the diesel is the same.

The civilian version does offer a gas powered GM V8, and the military version used/uses GM's now extinct 6.5 liter turbo diesel. When the Moraine Engine Plant in Ohio closed due to low sales of the engine, AM General bought the rights to and built a small plant to produce their own copies of the 6.5 liter.
Seperately, GM's new diesel (Duramax 6600, I worked there on the Cylinder Head line, built about 3 minutes from the site of the old GM plant) go into none of the Hummers.
