On eBay I see these two trannies right now...

"1997-04 4T40E Auto Transmission Chevy Malibu Cavalier"
"98-04 Pontiac 4T40E 2.2l 2.4l Sunfire Auto Transmission"

I own a '96 GA SE which has a tranny slowly failing. No way
I am going to invest $750+ in a reman unit, but I am curious
which transmissions would work in my car. In the event I do
come across something used/salvaged that could be worth it.

Are there differences between the models and/or years that
would make certain models not work with my car? Any ideas
on where I can find out what other models use the same one
as my '96 GA SE?

That's wrong, here is the right tranny for the years

GRAND AM 95-98 4 SP FWD L4 2.4L V6 3.1L 4T60E
GRAND AM 99-03 4 SP FWD L4 2.2L/2.4L 4T40E

I was assuming the 4T40E was for 4-cyl and 4T60E for 6-cyl.
I guess that is what I get for assuming anything. :) Thanks
for the info, that is very helpful.

Is the 4T60E tougher than the 4T40E? Or does the number
in the tranny model not really tell you anything about them?

4- 4 forward gears
T- transverse= FWD
40- basically a duty range. The higher the number, the stronger. 60 is stronger.
E- electronically controlled
