Guys I just wanted to know hom many kms you guys are getting from a full tank of gas. I use supreme fuel and I get about 370 kms to a tank.

I use regular gas and get between 500 to 600 kms per tank full.

Supreme fuel won't give you better gas mileage. It has more addivtives in it. Some people say the mid-grade or supreme will give you poorer gas mileage because it will not burn as well in most cars. The owners manual says regular so why waste money on higher price fuel.

Tell your mom to try using regular for a few weeks to see if there is a difference. As long as there is no knocking or pinging (which there probably won't be)

If there is no difference get her to buy you an extra pizza a month with the money you saved her... hahaha

Let my mom drive my car? You must be crazy, nobody drives my GA but me:D You get 500-600 kms to a tank? Man there must be something wrong with my GA lol

Sorry about that ...I thought your note mentioned that it was your "mom's car" ..... hey...the memory goes a bit when you get older.

Taking it easy off from red lights etc can make a difference.

This is not an easy question to answer, because everyone has different driving styles.

For instance, I have a rather heavy foot, but I don't go flooring it away from every stoplight. I usually rev it to about 3000 in 1st gear, and no more than about 3500 to 4000 in second, on average, when I am accelerating away from a stoplight. When merging, I usually get the tach needle to about 5000 because I hate people that take forever to merge.

My tanks are usually consumed doing primarily city driving with a few highway trips. I tend to average about 400 km per tank. On the highway, from Toronto to Ottawa or vice versa, I tend to average about 500 km per tank. However, this seems to be unusual.

I took the time to calculate, based on GM’s own data, the km per tank ratio that GM says Grand Am owners should be getting. Please note that GM is going to use the speed of 100 km/h (62 mph) when calculating the supposed highway economy. Nobody actually does the speed limit do they?

These calculations were done using the fuel economy data from the GM Canada website.
The data is as follows: for the 2.2L engine - 28 MPIG (city), 41 MPIG (highway), & 34 MPIG (combined); and for the 3.4L engine 26 MPIG (city), 42 MPIG (highway), & 33 MPIG (combined). This data was used in referenced in conjunction with the size of the fuel tank which is listed at 14.3 gallons (54.1 litres). I have posted all of these figures incase anyone feels that the calculations are not correct and wants to redo them. (However, that I highly doubt.)

The following chart shows how many kilometers per tank you are supposed to be getting for the 2.2L Ecotec L4 & the 3.4L OHV V6 respectively. Hope you enjoy.

For those with the 2.2 L engine, you should be getting – 338 (city); 495 (highway); & 411 (combined).

For those with the 3.4 L engine, you should be getting – 314 (city); 507 (highway); & 399 (combined).

I hope this sheds some light on the subject for those of you who are seemingly disappointed over what you are misinterpreting as poor fuel economy.

I can get from full to almost empty in 400 - 450 or so. I drive my GA pretty normal and sometimes hard depending on the situation :D

My '99 GASE with the V6 3.4L engine has:
about 15 US gallons / 56.5L gas tank,
I believe Transport Canada gas rating of 24 city / 36(or 37) highway miles per imperial gallon.

(Note: "The city test simulates a 12-kilometre, stop-and-go trip with an average speed of 32 kph and a top speed of 91 kph. The test runs for 23 minutes and includes 18 stops. Approximately 4 minutes of test time are spent idling to represent waiting at traffic lights. This test begins from a cold engine start which is similar to starting a vehicle after it has been parked overnight. When the test is completed, the test cycle starts again with a hot engine start and the first 8 minutes of the test are repeated. This simulates restarting a vehicle after it has been warmed up, driven, and then stopped for a short time.

The highway test simulates a 16-kilometre trip with an average speed of 77kph and a top speed of 97 kph. The test runs for 13 minutes and does not include any stops, however, the speed varies to simulate different kinds of rural and highway roads. This test begins from a hot engine start." from http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/asfbb/FCpgm/en/testing/page1_e.htm )

My best calculated (gas used vs km's driven, not driven bone dry) highway trip mileage was to Quebec City at about 800km / tank using cruise control the whole way at 110-120km/h.

My normal mostly city driving is 400-500km per tank.

I get 450-550 kms too, mixed city/highway. I use premium gas but have iridium plugs and no intake resonator (slightly bette air/fuel ratio).

Well, I use Sunoco (low sulphur content) regular unleaded. Depending on how I drive, I can get anywhere from 300 to 550 out of a tank. On average though, I get around 450 or so. I have a CAI and a Magnaflow exhaust so I don't know how that would affect my mileage. I do know that if I drive under 120 on the highway my car just SIPS the fuel. I did 225 on a 1/4 tank but didn't like driving at 110. :D

videoman
11-26-2002, 09:41 AM
On average I get about 430 in the city. Although I have a few mods that help, such as the Borla exhaust gave me about a
7-10% increase and my 10" K&N cone gave me about 20% increase from when I had the engine stock.

I would love to see what kinda miles I get on the hwy though...

BTW I use regular.

Im about 420 to a tank, which is about average I guess. I thought this was poor until I came across this post. Thanks guys.

I usually get around 450-500 kms, but I don't let it get below 1/4 tank b/c it's bad for my baby.
I use either Sunoco or Shell reg. unleaded (more often Sunoco) but true enough, it does depend on how I drive ;)
..and don't think chicks don't know how to mash on the gas...
:D

I get 440 - 450km a tank, and i do not by any means drive like an old lady, to you that get less then 400, i ask how the hell do you do it? i use regular gas, and drive like i stole it for the most part, all city driving. the lowest i've ever gotten was about 420, and the most was 510ish (i accually drove nice for a tank to see how good the milage could get).

On my commute for work the usual group of cars which I travel with, well, they like to do abOOt 10 under and move in one solid unpassable clump :rage:. So with this, I tend to get great gas mileage during the week- which for some reason gets shot to $h!+ on the weekend..go figure eh?!? lol
:D

When i first bought the car, i could only get 200 km on a tank, now with 8 months of breaking in, i'm up to 300. That still seems low compared to everyone else though...

One question I'd like to pose... Anyone think that heatsoak can affect your fuel economy alot? Say if you have an unsheilded cone filter inside your engine bay withought any heatshield...Could it reduce the economy enough to double your fuel consumption?

i had a unshielded cone in for some time, and if anything saw better milage, since it got about the same, but i drove it much harder then.

I'm getting about 450kms per tank using Fas Gas reg unleaded, and I'm not even thru break-in yet. The outside air temp has been everaging about -20. I'm hoping ym milage will go up after break-in and in the summer

I'm in troubles. I'm close to 270km
So, I live in Mexico City, where traffic is a big-problem.

Your supercharger and the high level of polution in Mexico City sure have something to do with it!

I guess I should have also noted that it was 100% highway driving, but I did venture over 100mph a couple of times, god those GAGT's can move:thumbs:

Yeah I love my wheels. The one Thing I would like to not from my last comment is. I am not generally a heavy foot at least not when I am trying to determine why my mileage is becomming so low. For the one day I drove about 35 Km in the city, not too may stop n go's but a few. I found my tank went from 3/4 to 1/2 easily. The first time I took measurement was after the car was warm , bout 10 into driving it. the only thing I could think of was that heatsoak was causing the computer to create a stronger Air / fuel mixture. That causing the milage to drop. Does this sound correct, can heatsoak cause that much of a difference?

BTW another note. the weather here was -15 'C and very dry that day.

Also videoman, General Motors fuel sensors are the most inaccurate things in the world. You can never get an accurate reading with those things, it is constantly fluctuating. My best advice to you is fill the tank up, put the cone back in, and run the car until the gas warning light comes on. That will proove if it has something to do with heatsoak, or a crappy fuel sensor.

ok cool, my driving is 100 percent agressive city driving. So that makes me feel a bit better.

I get 300 KM max.

I wanna cry when it's winter time because it's even less.

I think I'm gonna take it into the dealer and have them look at it and see if anything is wrong.

Everybody will have a different opinion on this one. I think all the big chains pretty much equal each other so just find one you like or use them all.

I think Shell is the best cause they have Air Miles :D

I have a 3.4 and I get about 350-450 km a tank. (usually fill it around 1/8 - 1/4 tank and I'm around 350 kms)

I've found that my car run's smoothest with mohawk 5% ethanol which is I think 89 octane.

I've even gone back to 87 octane at their stations and notice the idle get a hair rougher...

The only "performance" mods I have are a K&N drop-in filter, I removed the intake resonator, NGK Iridium spark plugs and Mobil 1 syntethic oil with a K&N oil filter.

None of these make a huge difference in itself but add them together and I'm sure it has a noticeable impact on MPG.

Winter tires will also eat away your MPG, I do 400km at most during the winter (Blizzak LM-22) as opposed to 450-550 km in the summer (stock RS-A). The gripier your tire the less MPG you'll get.

I know I'm dredging up an old thread but..... Since the weather has gotten super cold (read -30 or lower with windchill), my gas mileage has gone out the window big time!!! Especially with the snow on the ground too. I think my last tank I got about 280 - 300. Eugh.... I'm looking forward to the warmer weather.

Yeah I noticed that too... plus the fact that it is harder for your car to drive on winter roads ( more resistance, less traction ). I sure hope that spring feels up to the challenge of knock winter off its block.

i get about 500-550km that is almost all highway. to me this is bad compared to what GM says (26mpg city and 42mpg highway).
500km per tank is like 24mpg (us gallons).

In the city I get about 300 to 350 km per tank which seems to be about average from the posts I am seeing. I drive fairly easily I only have 15K on the car so it is not even broken in. Only mod I have is K&N drop-in.

Have only had 1 highway trip on the 407 and that was at 140 kph which did not give me great mileage, but it did get me across the full length of the 407 in about 40 minutes.

The only "performance" mod I have is a K&N drop-in filter, and new GM spark plug wires that are thicker then the original ones.
Like GIMLI I drive on Blizzak winter tires that are one size smaller than the original Grand-AM gt tires "SUNFIRE SIZE-took them from my old Sunfire : )" and I get about 390 to 410km at the most but in summer it's almost always at 490 city driving if you can call Caraquet NB a city : )) lol :D The last time I did hw driving I got about 510KM on a tank now that is better. My folks own a 2002 Buick Century and I once saw them do 850km with one tank that is with only hw driving, this is incredible.

Grand-Am cars do not have a big gaz tank.
