View Full Version : 1994 Trouble Codes

My fiance has a '94 GT with the 3.1L. It has a screwed up code system that several people have told me is common on '94 models. It has the OBDI style connector but the wires aren't in the right place to make the check engine light flash. Now the light is on but I can't figure out how to get the codes without taking it in to a shop. Anyone know if there are wires I can plug into, or an adapter to make a scan tool work? I'm not sure what style the computer itself is.
Any help would be great!

Get a ODB-I scan tool. It works just fine.
GM had some bastard cars in '94 and '95 that had an OBD2 system before OBD2 was required. I've heard it referred to as "Application Specific OBD2" but I didn't think the Grand Am was one of them, Hmmmm.

It's "OBD 1.5". The OBD1 paperclip trick will not work. Parts stores and most basic service places are usually out of the question... you'll need either a dealer or the actual scan tool made for GM OBD1.5. Make sure you call your dealer... seems not all of them have the ability to read ODB1.5.
And for general reference...
94 - OBD1.5
early 95 - OBD1.5
late 95 - OBDII (3100's will have addition of MAF, Quad 4's will have addition of cam position sensor)
