View Full Version : How much oil does your car use?

My girlfriend's '99 GA SE just used 1 quart in 2,300 miles through its first oil change with us. Do 2.4s use oil much? I'm curious as to who else here has a 2.4 that uses oil. The 3800 in my GP uses just under 1 quart, but that's over 4k miles with synthetic. Meanwhile, my Z28 uses zero over 4k miles with synthetic!
Just curious what the typical 2.4 uses...thanks.

The 2.4 will use oil, everyone I know with one has to constatly check it, adding at least 1 quart between oil changes (5k kms). Also you must religiously change the oil, the moment you slack on the schedule, you can expect to send pistons through the sie of the block.
The 3.4 in my car uses absolutely 0 oil between changes, I use mobil 1 synthetic and somtimes go by the oil life monitor system which goes as high as 12 000 kms!!! Its amazing, just a good motor I guess!!!

I got a 99' GT w/3400, uses no oil. I use Royal Purple synthetic.

I got a 2000 SE, 3400 with 111,000 miles. It uses no oil between oil changes and I change it every 4000 miles. I also just use good old Pennzoil 5W30.

My '96 2.4 used a quart every 1000-1500 miles. I ate it faster on higher speed thruway runs. I would check it every thousand and added as needed. I used 20W50 in the summer to reduce the oil usage. Oil got changed every 5,000 miles.
I bought the car wsith 10,000 miles and put 175,000 miles on it before the repairs cost more than it was worth. Took it out of service May 05.

My car use to use like a half pint every oil change (maybe more, maybe less), but since I had my LIM replaced it doesn't seem to be using oil anymore. I swear it's actually gained oil, because the dipstick shows I have oil past the full mark, and it didn't when the dealer changed it with the Gasket replacement. :nervous:

Good to know its not uncommon for 2.4s to burn oil. 3800s are known to as well, and yet even running synthetic I won't even burn one quart in 4k miles! Not bad when you consider synthetic is easier to burn.
I've owned 7 different GMs, and the '99 is the only one besides my old '89 Camaro 2.8 thats needed oil added between oil changes. I'm not concerned about it at all...the damn motor is tight and runs like a top! Thanks for the info...
