Does the weight difference in the 3400 and it's tranny (as opposed to the 2.2) effect the overall weight distribution of the GA and does that change the handling at all from the SE to the GT?

GT's have stiffer swaybars, and this affects handling, probably more than the weight difference of the 2.2 & 5spd would.

Maybe I should tell my story so you know what I'm getting at. At first, I was a little skeptical about the SE's 2.2 Ecotec. I had driven other GM 4-poppers in the past and found all of them to have diminishing acceleration in higher RPMs in every gear. But the 2.2 doesn't have this problem at all. Not only that, but the handling on the newer SE's is nice.
So does that make the GT nicer in comparison to the SE? Does the GT handle better? Does it feel like it shifts weight more than the SE? Obviously the acceleration would be better.

The handling is pretty decent on both cars, although the SE does have more body roll than the GT. Pushed hard they both roll a lot, I know, because I've autocrossed my SE (3400). For the power, the 2.2 makes a good amount of go, I could barely beat one with my stock 3400 a couple of years ago. That 5spd gets up and moving so well, but on the top end I started pulling. The GT looks better, but they are pretty much the same car.

So I would do myself justice to go test drive a GT before deciding over the 2.2 SE?

I think so. Additional torque and hp, nicer styling, premium sound, I'd at least check it out to see what you think. Handling wise, I don't think the difference is enough to get worried about, they both could use upgrading if you really wanna hit the twistes.

if i was in your position i would get the 4 cylinder with the manual. stick=more fun. and id say it also depends on how much you want to mod it. because if your planning on redoing the whole suspension, id think they would both be the same then. i have the 2.4 and i like it. also, if you really want the GT body you can do the conversion like i and others with the SE have done. but yeah it depends on what youre looking for in a car. i just wanted to put my .02 in.

So why did they scale back from the 2.4 to the 2.2? They're both DOHC, right?

couldnt tell you for sure either question. i just think they stopped using the 2.4 because they have been devolping the ecotec and then wanted to start using it in all of their vehicles. and i think the the 2.4 had been around for awhile. but the ecotec is no slouch. my mom has an 04 caviler with one and it is quick. so id say either way you go you will be happy.

2.2 is a better motor than the 2.4 in my opinion. The 2.4 was good too, but the ecotec is a great motor. Perfect for modding, the stock internals are quite strong. I've honestly considered going to a Cavalier a few times just because I want a 5spd, and there is great potential in the 2.2. Of course, if it wasn't a nightmare to bolt a 5spd to my 3400, I wouldn't be having these thoughts, and we wouldn't be having this conversation, because I wouldn't ever stop driving my car.

well, i cant say which is better but GM did put out a book on how to get 1000 HP out of the ecotec so it defintly has good modding potential like mentioned above.

I think they were at like 350hp just boosting it before they broke any of the stock parts. I've read that book that Rich is talking about, if your interested in what the 2.2 Ecotec is capable of, check that site out. I can't remember where it is, but if you know how to use the internet, you'll find it.

depends what you want to do with the car, if your not looking to mod it, get the gt.

I haven't decided yet. I will probably go with the GT. I would start getting into the mod thing, but my wife would more than likely hand me my ass.
