Summer Tires:
Provides the greatest traction in the dry.
(Some summer tires also provide excellent wet traction. But it depends on the tread pattern & the rubber compound.)
But only at temperatures above 7°C/45°F.
(Below that temperature: use other tires, like winter tires.)
All-Season (M+S) Tires:
Is really a misunderstood tire category.
As it is really good for only 3-seasons.
It is a compromise of both summer & winter tires; but does not perform as good as either of them.
But usually they seem to work better than summer tires in cold wet conditions.
All-Season tires stop sticking to the road at about -10°C/14°F.
Just because it is an all-season rated tire: It does not mean anything for winter/snow performance.
Because all it means in tread pattern is mathematically, the tire must have 25% of the tire with tread grooves.
That is why some all-season tires suck to be driven in the snow.
Note: One of the only tire that is all-season, that meets the winter tire rating is the Nokian WR tire.
It is more biased to winter traction than all-season.
But still is not as good as Nokian's Hakkapeliitta hard-core winter line.
Winter Tires:
There are different categories of winter tires, but they must all meet & receive this spec: http://www.tirerack.com/images/winter/photos/tech/severe_snowflake.gif
Winter tires generally stick to the pavement down to -30°C/-22°F.
The different categories are:
Winter Performance
Snow & Ice
Ice & Snow
Winter performance tires are higher speed rated with stiffer sidewalls & made for wet traction.
They perform much better in cold dry pavement than other winter tires.
They usually wear less than hard-core winter tires on dry pavement.
Their weakness is they perform less in deep snow & ice traction.
Snow & Ice tires priority is in deep snow traction & some ice traction.
They usually only have a Q-speed rating & have softer sidewalls.
They will wear out fast driven on dry pavement (especially if it is not cold outside).
Ice & Snow tires priority is ice traction & some snow traction.
Have similar characteristics to snow & ice tires, but bias towards for ice traction.
Even if there is no snow on the ground (like living in the city); winter tires provide superior traction in cold weather temperatures.
Generally steel wheels are better than aluminum wheels in the winter:
Because steel wheels weigh more than aluminum wheels, for more traction.
Snow & ice won't freeze up on steel wheels; like in the opening of aluminum wheels (it sucks to drive around with snow & ice frozen on the aluminum wheels, causing them to be out of balance )
Handle pot holes better (steel is stronger than aluminum).
& are cheaper to replace than aluminum, if damaged.
All tires in general provide the same traction at 7°C/45°F.
Summer tires provide better traction above 7°C/45°F & winter tires provide better traction below 7°C/45°F.
(Of course all-season tires provide better traction than summer tires below 7°C/45°F; but no where as good as winter tires.)
Since the old forum is gone (which contained a lot of great tire info) I want to create a database of tire options. Please only post tires you have used and please post in this format.

Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Position - 2000 Oldsmobile Alero GLS Sedan - Rockford, IL
Driving Style: Fast and Aggressive - Driving Condition: Combined Highway/City
Reviewer's Overall Rating: 8.57 out of 10 - Review Submitted 2002-08-19
Size: 225/45ZR17 91Y
Comments:Purchased these to replace Potenza RE730's in the same size, which I wore out in 8000 miles. The S-03's seem to be a resounding improvement in every way. Dry traction is on par with the RE730, but when the roads get wet is where the S-03's really shine - handling and grip are just as confident in the wet as in dry conditions. Very good steering response, but could use a bit more sidewall stiffness. Surprisingly, for a "Max Performance" tire, the S-03 rides very quietly and comfortably, despite the highly modified suspension on this vehicle. But don't even think of driving with them in the snow. Bonus: price is very reasonable compared to other tires in this size and category. Two big thumbs up.

Comments: Just as Matt stated above, excellent in every category. Dry, Wet, Looks, Feeling, all A+. I have grown up with nothing but performance tires with my dad always having the tricked out cars and this tire is definitely one of the best. I would probably pee my pants before these tires would let me down. Especially in the wet traction category..........when I first drove these in the rain I seriously was speechless, I could have raced a vette and won just on tire grip alone. A bit pricey if you don't have connections but definitely worth every penny if you are willing to trade off tread life for performance.

Comments about your tires: Excellent low-cost, TRUE all-season tire. Wet and dry traction are much better than the RSA's, and snow traction as at least twice the Goodyears. These tires also last quite well, too. Major downfalls: 1)not a great handling tire (part of this is due to my 55 aspect ratio) and 2) Not the wildest looking tread. If you want phreaky looking tires get the Yokohama Paradas :p

Comments about your tires: Great all season tire (not used in winter). Handling is far better than the Goodyear Eagle LS's on dry and wet surfaces. Tires have approximately 12k on them right now and have a ton of tread left. These tires are also much quieter than many other tires of similar size. Very similar noise level to the stock tires.

Comments: great tire. i like them better than my Eagle RS-As which wore out pathetically early for what is supposed to be such a high quality tire. They're not that much more sticky for being a V speed rated tire, but they kick the RS-As butts in wet weather traction. I prefer unidirectional tread anyway. Cost is half of an RS-A anyway.

Comments: ...these tires grip really well and performance is great...car handles much better in rain with these than with my stock Goodyears... got them for $135 a piece which i would assume is pricey, but i think it well worth it... my only gripe is that the road noise between 55mph and 60mph is really bad... but i expected that with low profile tires...

Comments: For only $115 each from a Wal-Mart tire & lube They are a good all around tire. The only compliant that I have is they make a screaching noise when i take a turn a bit hard. Then again they are H speed rating unlike the stock RSA's that were Z rated. They have good traction and handling for an H rating tire. I would deffinatly buy them again if I was low on cash, like when I got them.

Model : Ecsta Supra 712

Comments : A very good tire. It has an excellent tolerance for treadwear relative to other performance tires. It's tread pattern is excellent for wet weather. And the speed rating is solid as well - VR. For the money they seem like a very good tire and are way ahead of the comparable Nitto 455, in price and in durability. They cost around $100 on the internet.
My one gripe is that the sidewalls look tall on the tires, especially compared to the Goodyear RS-A's. It is just in the way that Kumho decided to do the writing on the sidewall. But when you have all four on your car the look will be balanced and more appealing.;)
***UPDATE January 2006 - CT Hills / Near a Mountain Ski Resort... Reflection.
I used these tires in a run up 30* grades IN THE SNOW. It was a trek, but the car made it up these grades on 2 inches of packed snow and ice. I drove this night-drive for 60 miles in these horrific 'the shining'-like conditions. With care and masterful driving I did not lose any control of my motor vehicle. Yes, quite yes, I was in the Grand Am, with 100k miles, H&R drop, NextLevel RSB - and a broken-in transmission, coupled with a crippling near the "E" gas depletion situation in the middle of focking nowhere. Bearing the burden of a full load of passengers I would have certainly preferred a softer sidewall, and perhaps more tread than my Kuhmo's then modest baldness (30k mile wear). However, if you have patience and superb driving aptitude, perhaps you can repeat my extraordinary usability of these tires.
I give myself a 10.
I give the Kuhmos 712s a 7 in the dry/wet.
I give the Kuhmo 712s a 5 in the snow.

When I put these tires on (bent rims and all!) I lost almost all of my front end vibration problem casued by GM's sh!t rotors....believe it or not!
I'm now riding on Kumho Ecsta Supra's because they came with my second hand 17" rims. BTW I am VERY impressed with the Kumho's, they are MUCH better than I ever imagined they would be. Maybe I should rate them too....

No, the XGT-V4 tires are known for quick wear! I had them on my old Stang and they lasted a whole 4 months in the back! Replaced them with BFG Comp T/A VR4's ... best American tire I ever owned! They grip better than the "old" ZR's, but I have not tried the new ZR redesign yet.

Comments: I have not put that many miles on them yet, but I can tell that they handle better than the stock Goodyears.
Because of the stiffer sidewalls, fast cornering moves the body of the car more and does not allow the tire to flex. At high speeds the tires get very warm and the tread becomes gummy and sticky. Lane changes at 70mph+ are a breaze. At higher speeds the car is more stable on the road. I was very impressed with the ride. The tires absorb most of the bumps, they can be felt in the car but are not mushy and do not rattle the car cabin.
I just drove in a nice Texas Rain Storm. The tires gripped the road like it was dry. This made it easy to make a 90 degree turn onto a faster moving street.
Update: Unfortunately I lost my car in accident, but I do believe these tires helped me to avoid the car that changed lanes in front of me. Too bad the passive ABS could not help me avoid the k-rail.
These tires wore extremely fast I had them on for about 2 yrs, and put about 20,000 miles on them. They were loosing there water traction fast and would have been replaced in the summer.
Conclusion: They are cheap and perform well, rotate them often (every 4-6,000 miles), but expect to replace them at about 30,000 miles.

Just replaced the OEM RS-As with Dunlop SP Sport A2. In addition to the increased traction (the Goodyears had 55,000 miles on them), I also noticed the rubbing noise that was so prominent at low speeds is now gone. No opportunity yet to try the tires on a twisty road. I've had this model of Dunlop on a previous car (1996 Plymouth Breeze) and they were excellent, providing good wet and dry traction, wear and handling.

These are by far the best tires I have ever used. They were more than I wanted to spend ($145 a tire), but I'm very happy with them. They are the number 1 rated tire at TireRack. They are not for winter use thou, but that is why they make snow/ice tires.

Comments:Purchased these to use during the cold and snowy winter months; Potenza S-03's and winter do not go together. Anyway, they do require and adjustment in driving style, since the sidewall construction and tread compound are very soft. In warmer (>40 degrees F) they can get downright squirrly, but in the cold, they are the best thing since sliced bread. Grip is excellent in wet or dry conditions, and tread noise is not too bad - they do sing a bit on concrete, however. Much better than all-seasons in winter and an absolute must if your other tires are summer-only. Thumbs up.

Comments:I went by Discount Tire today to get some BFG g-Force T/A KDWS's installed after I talked to a guy yesterday and said he had them and could do them today. Well, it turned out that they had them at the warehouse, not the store, so they didn't have them today. They told me they had these Yokohama's that were "an excellent tire with great reviews" so I said to go ahead and put them on. I left, took one u-turn and a couple quick movements of the wheel to test the sidewalls out and I already HATED them. The sidewalls were VERY weak, so much so that it felt like i was driving a boat on water. The ride though without cornering was very nice. I turned around and they took them off, ordered my BFG's and gave me some loaner tires since my old Kumho's were toast. They gave me no trouble and didn't seem annoyed by my displeasure.....

Comments : I have chosen to do 2 reviews on this tire. The first will be for the first 20,000 miles, the second will be for the last 10,000 miles. I will give a rating for each period.
0 to ~20,000 miles - These tires were a wonderful perfoming tire. Ride was a little stiff, but the sidewalls held up wonderfully in the corners. Wet and dry traction was great. For the price, I was very impressed with these tires, but even at 15,000 miles they were starting to show alot of wear (maybe I was just enjoying them too much!). Rating 8/10
~20,000 to 30,000 miles - The tread was getting pretty low, but still decent. About this time I moved and began driving on rougher roads daily. After a couple months of driving on the rough roads, my car began to handle unpredictably. The car would shift laterally when on rough roads, so much so that my GF was afraid to drive my car. I had thought it was my struts and possibly the strut mounts and just put it off. After hating the way my car was driving for months, I decided to start the process of correcting my suspension problems. First, new rotors to stop the wobble while braking. Didn't solve the problem. Second I was going to replace the tires (since they were getting bald), then replace suspension components until my car began to handle in the proper manner. Today, I replaced my 4 tires and my car now handles almost as well as it did when the Kumho's were new. I can only attribute the difference to a more aged suspension and a less stiff sidewall. All the problems that had me concerened with driving my car are GONE. The Kumho's WERE good, but as they aged, they turned HORRIBLE! Now, maybe it was the care I gave them, but I have never had a tire's ride quality deteriorate like these tires did. Rating 4/10
In a week, I will have the BFG g-Force KDWS review, but after 1 day, they are rising to the top :D

The only thing I don't care for is the sliding effect I get when going into a corner hard, but I know I'm pushing it and it isn't the tires fault. :) Don't expect to get more than 13k or so miles out of them, though. After 13 months, I need new tires again.

Comments:The only comments that I can add in addition to ICEMAN's are that these tires are absolutely phenominal in the snow. I was totally amazed at how well they cut through the white crap.
I will say that they are definitely softer than the BFG Comp T/A's that they replaced...but I expected that.
I will update my input in a couple months to include my opinion on their wear....so far very acceptable.
UPDATE (6/04): The Sumi's, while overall very pleasing, wear much too quickly. I have a pair with about 25000 miles on them and they are TOAST. My newer pair, which were installed 11/03 are down to the wear bars already at approximately 12-13000 miles. My driving habits are a bit aggressive....but they have always been. I've had other tires put up with a LOT more for a lot longer. This is not to say the Sumi's are bad, in fact they are exceptional in rain and especially snow. In fact they are amazing in snow. They just wear too damn fast. I would still recommend them...you can't beat $90/each @ Tire Rack!!!

These are the stock tires that came with the car in '99. I bought the car with 28,000km on it and there was no wear to be seen. I figure I will have more to say after a year of driving it but so far I can't complain. They were great in a big down pour we had a week ago....no hydro at all. We'll see what the snow brings soon. Also Bf Goodrich have stopped producing these tires (just found out).

Comments:Great tires, excellent all around: dry, wet, or snow. I had a set of Goodyear RS-As before I got these, and while the RS-As were not bad tires, these are superior in about every way. Theyre noisier than the RS-As, but they have a lot more grip in the corners, and a lot better foul-weather traction. Ive been very impressed with how well they do in the snow, especially considering their high speed rating and high-performance focus. The biggest downside is one that has been noted before: these tires look a little narrow for their stated section width, but that doesnt seem to affect their capabilities at all. I will warn you to watch your tire pressures: only 2-3 pounds more than recommended can make the car feel a tad twitchy. Im not so sure on treadwear, as I only have 6000 miles on them, but they seem to be wearing well. Anyone who is looking for a good high-performance all-season tire would do well to consider these.

Size: 225/50/WR16

Comments: Yep, Matt's got another new pair of shoes. I think I need to re-adjust my driving, because I can't afford a new set of summer tires every year! Anyway, even though I only have about 5000 miles on these Goodyears, I like them. Excellent dry and wet traction, and very quiet. They lack a bit of sidewall stiffness as compared to my previous Potenza S-03s, but the Goodyears make up for it in a smoother ride and reduced weight (I found each Goodyear to weigh about 1.5 pounds less than a same-sized S-03). Expensive at about $160 per tire, but they are a few dollars less than S-03s, and have a higher treadwear rating to boot.....we'll see how that one plays out. So far, so good.

Excellent service, horrible tire recommendations......
BFG g-Force T/A KDWS review to follow soon!

Finally replaced the last two RS-A's with a pair of Sumitomo HTR+'s in the stock 225/50x16 size, although they are W-rated instead of the stock tires V-rating. The HTR+'s are a lot quieter than the RS-A's (no more crunching sounds at low speeds) and steering response is many times better so the car responds to every steering input immediately. A quick highway blast on the way home shows that the cars tendency to follow imperfections in the pavement is gone. Paid way more than the discount stores as I went to my local Sears Auto Center (needed tires today, not tomorrow or Monday...) but worth the money. The GT finally feels like a sports sedan.

I've got 35K on mine (with lots of abuse from the SC...lol) That's very good for a z rated tire. I'm very happy with them. When the time comes to replace them, I'll be getting another set.

After installing them I immediately noticed 100% better handling, traction etc etc. It even rained on the way home from the swap and the wet weather traction was amazing. Dry and wet handling equals each other and is amazing. They recieve an 8 because the tread wore through pretty quickly, and these tires only have a 220 for tread wear.

Comments: Also a very nice tire, I bought these to replace the S0-3s. In my opinion dry performance is better than the S0-3s. Cornering is also better, I can rip corners without any issues. Were these tires suffer (when compared to the S0-3s) is wet weather handling. They still handle amazingly in the rain, but taking sharp turns at 40+ in rain does take a little skill. They out perform the SO-3s in tread as they have a 300 for tread wear. Also, you cannot beat the price, $94 a peice at www.edgeracing.com Tires below are the Toyo's

All of these BF Goodrich tires have a traction rating of A, of course AA means you get better traction out of them...but they should bite decent and provide better lifespan with the harder compound. Most of them are Z or V rated! :driving:

I will add to this and say these tires are pretty good. They were new when I got the car, and I have gone 10K on them all year around. I havent had anything to compare them to but they are good tires.
Just an update on these tires. 2 of them are completely worn out....my bad due to a bad alignment. The other 2 tires are fine though and I am at 19K miles on them. I drive them aggressively. About a little less than half life left in them I would say (the 2 good tires that is).
I'm thinking of getting some a little better though since I need new tires, probably try out the Yokohama Avid V4S.

How have these been performing for you? How about an updated review puleeease? Im stuck between these and a few others - including the YK420's and the man at discounttire told me that the two were just about the same. BUT, the tread doesn't even LOOK the same. So I wasn't trusting the guy. The YK420's were a tad more expensive so im a little confused by which tire to go with. Anyways, HEXX, can you hook me up w/an update on those Avid V4s?

Just for a real life review of these tires.... Great in everthing but tread life. I dont peel out or drag race but When I rotated them the front are pretty low. http://www.tirerack.com/images/tires/kumho/ku_712.jpg
Brand: Kumho
Model: Ecsta Supra 712
Size 225/45/17 and 245/45/17
Rating: 7 out of 10
Comments: The 225's were fairly decent. The wear on these tires, for lack of a better word, SUCK. The tire wear rating is 280 which seems to be the average for most tires. The 225/45/17's traction were pretty good, but not good enough, so I bought me 245/45/17s.
The 245's rocked for traction, could take turns at 40mph, no problem if I wanted (tried not to cuz tires wear fast). Could still spin tires if I wanted also. The tires are stiff, has nice sidewall belts to assist in that, traction pretty good....never lost traction. Even in the rain on almost bald tires, traction still good. Wouldn't recommend it though. Each set only lasted me about a year to year and half. Cheap priced tire also. Road noise noticeable, but not too bad (i turn up the volume to my music).
On the downsize to getting bigger tires and from going from 15" rim to 17", gas mileage dropped quite a bit. With 225's on 17's my gas mileage went from 300+ mpt (miles per tank) to about 260/270. 245's went from 260/270 to between 220-240 mpt.....depending on freeway and/or regular road use. If anyone has info on adjusting the computer for that, please let me know.
http://www.tirerack.com/images/tires/kumho/ku_ecsta_asx_ci2_l.jpg
Brand: Kumho
Model: Ecsta ASX
Size 245/40/17
Rating: so far 9 out of 10 (only bout 600 miles of use)
Comments: I've put about 600 miles on these tires so far. From Tirerack.com, got these to my door for $520 (tires, shipping, road hazard thing). All the tire shops round here wanted $700 just for tires, not even including mount & balance.
Anyway, so far these tires ride good. Seem to ride smoother than the Ecsta 712's above. I originally wanted to get Yokohama AVS ES100's cuz tread looks awesome, but their tire wear was low and I wanted a tire that would last. This new set of Kumhos has a tire wear rating of 420, so they should last longer as long as I don't take high speed turns and try to spin the tires.
And actually, these tires grip so well, it's hard to spin the tires. As of yet they don't seem to ride as stiff as the 712's and seems a little "floaty" (as they say), but that should get better as I put more miles on them. Replacing my suspension should also help, which I will be doing in the near future.
Traction is REAL good. Was flying down the highway at 100 the other day with some dude trying to race. Bad example, I know, but I had to try out my new tires. I actually drive like a grandpa now. I take turns at 10mph now, cuz if peel the shoulders on my tires I'll probably cry. $520 plus lifetime mount and balance plan ($260) at local tire shop is a lot to spend on just tires.
Anyway, good tire so far. Traction good, can't tell about wear yet. Rides good, road noise not very noticeable (less than 712s). Low priced $105 a tire i think. Oh and that little episode on the highway, I actually got about 270 miles to that tank. That's highway use though. I usually get 230.

about 10k miles on these tires so far....tire tread wear is pretty good considering I've been abusing them. The tires are kind of floaty, which I do not like. It could be the suspension, which I need to replace. I give the tires a 8 out of 10 now.

I have over 15k on my set of Ecsta ASXs, and the treadwear has been great. They still grip pretty good and they are still quiet. The wet traction is still pretty good as well. I got mine for $85 each at America's Tire Company. I am going to buy a set for my GF's car as well.
I have not had the 'floatly' problem that you are describing. I think you are right that it is your suspension causing that feeling.

hey peeps.
ok the time has come for me to replace all 4 of these crappy (IMO) Goodyear Eagles on my 2000 GrandAm GT.
I see alot of tires here.. but not alot of pricing etc.
My local dealer recommened the Bridgestone Potenza tire.
Asked them for a quote and they are saying about $900 CAD installed.
Yup..I'm also in Canada and have to deal with snow about 4 months of the year or more. So I need All Seasons.
Is $900CAD a good price for all 4 installed?? or should I do some shopping around??
I know the Eagles are way more expensive than this.. but after going thru 6 tires in just over 100,000KM.. i'm not very happy with the wear.

It makes a difference in the price & how we can help you select if the tire is good or not.
3rd: What size? Stock?
4th: All-Season (M+S) means nothing for 'snow performance'.
Just that the rubber doesn't freeze until it is -10°C/14°F outside.
& like that at least 25% of the tread design has some grooves in it.
Looking for snow performance, get winter tires that have this rating:

Brand: Hankook
Model: W300 IceBear
Size: 205/55R16
Rating: 9/10
Comments: Fantastic Tires! Great Ice and Snow traction, aswell as superb Dry and Wet traction!
I've used them for about 15,000kms and they are performing well. Softer sidewalls mean not a good cornering tire, but everything else is good!

Model: SP Sport FM 901
Size: 245/40/18
Treadwear: 200
Score: 8 out 10
These have awesome dry traction, wet traction is something to be desired, but is okay. These are a summer only tire and should not be tried in the snow. I have had them on the car for ~ 3000 miles and took them off before the snow. I have been very happy with these tires, they have little road noise (read: less road noise then my Potenza RE 950s) and exellent cornering. These are a 200 tread wear tire, don't expect them to last much longer then 20,000 on hard driving conditions and more then 36,000miles on normal driving conditions! Price from discount tire was $114/tire with free shipping. Not bad for something that I am going to abuse and shred with burnouts!

Brand: MasterCraft
Model: Avenger HP
Size: 225-50-R16
Rating: Don't really know what rating to give them.
Comments: When dry they are great, and even in the rain the perform pretty well, not the best tire i've ever had but in the summer time these tires perform great, no complaints except for a little squealing around hard cornering, very quiet on the road too. although they do wear pretty quickly, just make sure to rotate them every 3000-4000 miles.
Brand: MasterCraft
Model: Avenger ZHP
Size: 225-50-R16
Rating: Don't really know what rating to give them.
Comments: About the same everything as the Avenger HP, although thier cornering is better, but in the rain on takeoff they spin very easily.
Brand: Fusion
Model: ZRi
Size: 225-50-ZR16
UTQG: 320 AA
Rating: Don't really know what rating to give them.
Comments: In the summer, these tires are the best tires I have ever gotten for my grand am, my mom put these on her mustang and she likes them a lot too. In the rain, they aren't too bad and do about as well as the Avenger HP, for being a z Rated tire I thought they were a very good tire. In a light snow they are okay, but in a heavy snow, none of these are any good, so find a good snow tire and go for it.

Rating: 8 out 10
Comments: I had never heard of this brand, but i guess they are pretty big in japan and overseas for a good alternative to more expensive brands but they have very good dry traction, havent done much in the rain. great ride and handling

Rating: 9/10
Comments: Had a pair of these on my Sunfire. Dry Traction was Awesome, I couldn't make them squeal on corners no matter how hard I tried. Was like riding on glue. Wet traction was better than most, but once the tread starts to wear out (like when your riding on 3/32) Get new ones. Once past about 4 or so 32ed's wet traction sucks.

Comments: I've only had these tires on for about 1,000 miles but they are fabulous especially when compared to the rsa's. They have a 40k warranty and a utoq rating of 400. I got a great deal on these already inexpensive tires. I paid $325 at Indy Tire (Best One in other states) including installation and road hazard. Great tires at a great price!

Brand: Falken
Model: FK-452
Size: 225-40R18
Rating: 9 out of 10
Comments: For the money, these are amazing. I owned the FK-451 on my stock wheels and they were an awesome upgrade. These new ones, in the 18 inch, were $120 a tire, solid treawear rating and a nice stiff sidewall for maximum handling.

Brand: Cooper
Model: Zeon 2XS
Size 225/40/18
Rating: 9.5 out of 10
Comments: Very nice riding tire. Excellent handling and grip. Little-to-no chirp when taking a hard corner. W/Y rated for 'highway' speeds and produces very little road noise.
Time for new tires. :)
I put almost 60,000 miles on one and a half sets (bought in pairs) of Sumitomo HTR+ (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Sumitomo&tireModel=HTR%2B). Overall, these weren't bad tires with plenty of steering feedback and more than adequate grip in the wet and dry and passable grip in snow and ice. The downside was that as they aged they started to get noisy; at low speeds they sound like off-road tires.
I got a set of Kuhmo Ecsta ASX (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=Ecsta+ASX) in the stock 225/50x16 size, W rated. So far I've only put about a hundred miles on these tires, but they grip dry pavement well and are very quiet. Time will tell if they hold up as well as the Sumitomo's.

Question
The current brand of tires my parents shoved on their alero are Arctic claws
my dad believes they are winter tires, and it does have the mountain and snowflake logo, but theres the M+S designation on em... all seasons with winter designation? or actual winter tires>?

Brand:BF Goodrich
Model:g-force Super Sport A/S (ultra high performance all seasons)
Size:225/50/16
Price Paid:caught them on sale at Tirerack.com for $82/tire. Regular price $118/tire.
Accompanying suspension mods:Eibach springs, KYB GR2 struts, stb's front and rear, Next Level rear sway bar with ES bushings.
Comments:I have been running Yokohama Avid V4's for the last 3 years or so. I've used Yoko Avids before and liked them on another car. They did well enough for the price I paid for them a few years ago, which was 80 a tire. Only complaint was the sidewalls flexed a little too much and had a slight mushy feel when pushed. Also made the front tires look like they were always low on air because of sidewall squat. When it came time to replace them, the price had crept to 99 a tire.
So I found these newer g-force Super Sport A/S's on sale at Tirerack for $82 a tire. They've been on the market for about 10 months to a year. Compared them to the leading tire closest in price, which was the Yokos, and according to data they beat them in every catagory. So I though it over for the night, went back the next day to Tirerack.com and the sale was over! Just like that! Never fear, I called Tirerack and the representative gave me the sale price from the day before. So I hopped on it and got these tires shipped out. Love TR's customer service btw.
Looks:The tread pattern is very aggressive with plenty of siping and channels for water flow and good tread blocks for traction and snow. Very sharp pattern. The sidewall is my only let down. I prefer the look of tires such as my Yokohamas or stock Goodyear RS-A's. Or Bridgestone Potenzas. The BF Goodrichs are somewhat understated and overly simple on the sidewall design. Not quite as sharp looking as I would want, so I would only give them a 8 in the looks department.
Performance:I knew as soon as I drove the car away from the shop that these were going to be fun tires. The ride is taunt without being jarring. Its firm going around corners and managed to take some of the slop and body roll out of turns. They don't seem to ever mush out under load and always maintain composure. No squealing going around corners where my Yokos would scream like a stuck pig, even when new. The g-forces feel like they always maintain a sure and level footing. They never fight you or make you think you're going too far. They are always ready to do exactly what you ask. Dry traction is excellent. Wet traction so far seems great. I haven't tested them in snow yet, but it's Ohio and I know it's coming. Braking is good, causing the ABS to kick in earlier then I'd have thought. All around, I have nothing bad to report about the performance of this tire so far. So far, 10 out of 10. We'll see how many miles I get out of them. I got about 33,000 out of the Yokohama Avid V4s.
Value:I admit that the main reason I went with these tires was because of the promotional sale of all BF Goodrich tires at Tirerack. With a regular price of $118 a tire, I'm not sure how much value is lost, but at $82 I feel like I got a real steal, stepping up a catagory level without having to pay the extra cost, or even the cost to maintain my status quo (Yoko@99). Value for what I paid: 10.
Total score- 28 out of 30.
