View Full Version : replacing lifters

Ok I finally decided to replace lifters or rockerarms. I'm going to do it myself along with some help. My question is has anyone done this and has it helped the annoying knocking noise?

What kind of noise are you talking about? If its related to the cam, then maybe, but if you're talking about piston slap then replacing the lifters and rockerarms won't do a thing for it. You'll have to have the engine disassembled and rebuilt.

It's the common knocking all I've heard was the lifters to be the reason well I'm going to get into before I purchase parts.

I bet its piston slap, its common almost normal for the 3400.
Just do it when your LIM gasket blows :D

The noise is there even after the car warms up, or just during warm up? Many of GM's v6's are noisy on startup, but quiet down once they warm up a little. IF this is all your experiencing, you don't have anything to worry about. If you've got some other constant internal noise that does need to be addressed.

Well I'm not going to overexagerate the noise like its the loudest thing you've heard but it definitely isn't normal. It constinatly knocks when cold or warmed up. It's more previlate when cold though like the oil isnt getting good pressure but I don't know. Even if I drive a while and stop at a drive-thru without the radio on I can hear it.

Yea, if you hear it warmed up, then you do have problems worth looking into. How many miles do you have on that car? Does it sounds pretty close to the top of the more, or dull like its down deep? I would think valvetrain noise is probably what you are hearing, its not very common to have bottom end trouble on these cars. Conversely, the top-end is hella noisey even on a brand new 3400, I've always had to tolerate some valvetrain noise on my own car.

Yeah, my 99 GT w/90k miles is a little chattery when its cold, but when it warms up the piston noise is gone with little or no noise from the valves. If its still loud at warm up something is not right.

yea well I have 95,000 miles now. I decided if I'm going to keep it then it's worth at least looking into. It's really hard to explain on here how it sounds. When I do get to fixin it I will let everyone know what it was and if it fixed it.
