View Full Version : power steering variable assist valve

I understand when changing the power steering pump on my 99ga with variable assist,3.4l, that I can re-use my old valve and connector. Can anyone tell me how it comes off? Also, is the pulley just pressed on, or fastened somehow?
Thanks in advance.

Pulley is pressed on. Be careful when pulling it off, it bends easy.

yes, how do you take off the variable assist actuator and swap it to a new pump wihtout it??

nevermind I figured it out.
Okay at the bottom of where the actuator is you'll see two circular shaped clips. Remove those.
Then the black plastic cylinder cover should slide off. Then theres a smaller metalic cylinder thats threaded into the rest of the actuator. Unscrew that with a wrench and pull it out. it will have a pin in it so dont lose it.
after this you can twist the other half of the black cylinder off and the entire thing will be removed. Just make sure the new pump you are purchasing is an exact copy of your old one minus the variable steering..because it has to thread into where the pump line would normally go and then split that into a pump line/electric connector.
youll understand what i mean when you look at it
