on 1 & 2, the A/C dont work...3, 4, & 5, it does.

3's a little too high, makes things hot or cold a little too fast, or make the car super hot or cold....

it started with 1...then eventually 2 stopped working (this all happened while i was gone_

so what could be the problem?

Well I can see that you haven't been on these forums very much so, check out at the top of this page the stickys. Look for the one that says HVAC Knobs not working and read on. It is your Blower Motor Resistor, about a $25 fix that takes about 15 min.

So, if one were to have a problem with just only the first setting, I would just need this resistor as well. This resistor works for all five settings, im guessing?

i'm guessing seeing that mines started with 1 not working then now 2 dont work....i figure if i dont change it, 3 will be the next to go.

3 wont be the next to go. I havent heard anyone having anymore than 1&2 go, the rest should be fine.

I've heard of 3 and 4 going without 1 and 2 going. There are 2 sets of resistors inside. The set that controls 1 and 2 and the set that controls 3 and 4. 5 is a direct connection without resistance, so that shouldn't fail, unless none work, but that would be a different electrical problem.

My moms 1999 grand am had it happen twice, once before the warranty went out and once after.

My 2002 grand am hasn't had it go yet, but it is probably because I barely use speeds 1 and 2. Usually 3 through 5 on either the dash vents or the defroster vents and if it gets too cold or hot it will be 3 through 5 on the floor, or it is off. I really wouldn't be bothered if the that resistor went out.
