View Full Version : Price to replace an engine?

One of my friends also has a GA, he killed his engine with a combination of a low oil level and later having his LIM fail without finding out until it is too late. He found an engine at a junkyard and he is wondering what sort of ballpark price it would be to have a shop install a 3.4L engine into his 2001 Grand AM? I figure that it is very labor intensive, but I want to know about how much should he expect it to cost. Would he be better off letting the junkyard's shop install it, or would he be better off tossing it in the back of his pickup bed and drive it somewhere else. The junkyard has a good reputation and will provide a 90 day warrenty if they install it.

Shouldn't be too bad of an install, if the GA already had a 3.4 in it.
Where are you in MN?

I would expect the same price at either place. They both charge a flat rate. The JY may cut a better deal since it's their engine.
The Junkyard can go out to the donor car if they forgot something.

if you can get an engine, and get it installed for 200 you should be all over that! Around here it off the top of my head..... somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,000.00 plus tax. Maybe more maybe less, but thats just an idea.

$700-1,200 for the labor(excluding engine)? He was thinking around $500, he already has the engine lined up, he is just trying to find the price for the replacement, we will be calling the place tomorrow and see what they say.
I personally am not sure how worth it it could be paying $1,200 for the labor plus the price of an engine if it could have possibly been a LIM leak engine that was neglected with coolant in the crankcase. ...I suppose their 90 day warrenty might end up being used, so I think it will be with the same junkyard he is getting the engine from...
