Well I did some searching and didn't find any real answers so, here I go, posting a likely dumb question, but here goes... I just bought the wife a 2004 GA/GT since she liked the 99 GA/GT1 we bought new so much, and she didn't much care for the new G6. I know a lot of non cosmetic stuff was changed since 99, but rather than hunt and search topic after topoic after topic, I was wondering if anyone knew what all WAS changed since the car was first introduced?

Side mirrors and cargo net is the first things to come to my mind and of course the SC/T "option", but that dont count.

And wheels. And I think the guage cluster was slightly different. The guages don't have that raised look to them as they did in the 99... I THINK.

no tire pressure gauge light in the 04. i think the 04 doesnt have a glove box lock. or that might be the 05's. updated LIM maybe? thats all i can think of that wasnt already mentioned.

^I don't think anything changed with a cupholder. It's just an add on that you could get.

I think they killed the passenger side vanity mirror in 2003 (?). Radio headunit changed in 2001, side mirors in 2002.5, V6 HO badges changed to RamAir in 2001, killed side badges in 2003, I think the center cupholder went from an insert to a molded in part in 2003(?), gray seat fabric seemed to get lighter sometime. Those are the only things I can think of for the GT. The SE had more major body moulding and engine changes.

^ Side badges went in '02.5 as well, and my cup holder is molded into the console too. Everything else is right on, nothing more I can think of. Nothing too significant anyway, mostly bean-counter changes. lol

99's Had Tire Pressure Monitors 00+'s did not

99 (Maybe 00's) Speedo and Tach were raised from the rest of the cluster, after 00 or 01 they were flat

In 00 or 01 the cup holder became standard, and in one of the years it became molded as part of the center console.

Wheels changed in 01 or 02

Side mirrors became unpainted at one point

glove box lost it's lock

Some interior parts turned from a dark gray to black

that's all I know of.

The cup holder in front of the shifter, or the one in front of the center console? My car did not come with a cup holder in front of the center console.

My 01 has a "loose" cupholder behind the shifter.

I have 2 infront of the shifter and one behind the shifter. All three are "molded" in. Non are "loose", as in removable.

You buy your car new or used, Coupe? I think '02 (maybe '03) was when they became molded in.

From 2000 to 2001, the floorwell lights that shined on your feet are gone. When you hit the brakes in a 2000 and the ABS brakes kicked in, the "low trac" light came on also- that was gone for 2001. In 2003, the green "cruise" light on the dash disappeared. Also in 2003, you could pull the DRL relay out and not get a Service Vehicle Soon light. 2001 also brought on the number 1 & 2 key fobs. 2003 on up, the trunk lock is silver, not black like the rest of them.

I bought it used with 28K miles on it.

In my 2002 the rear cupholder behind the shifter is the shape of the front cupholders but a little bit deeper and has a rubber insert that can be removed for cleaning. In the 99 it isnt a cupholder but more of a change tray. There were some changes with the stock wheels, the ugly common stock wheels left while new ones replaced them.

cliff notes

2000+ No tire pressure monitoring system, not like it worked right.
2001+ no floor lights. But they did get the class data 2 wiring system, and a double din radio.
2002+ Alero sideview mirrors
2003+ Traction control is not standard, no more ribs, almost all SEs got the crappy cd player, and not the RDS one that looks nice. No badges on the side for the SE.
2004+ No glove box lock, again it's not like it worked in the first place.
2005 who knows

also my cup holder is like DrFabulous

Coupe... take a closer look at the pic DrFabulous included on the first page. On our 99's you can practically fit a 7-11 Super Big Gulp cup into that shallow little cup holder/change holder behind the shifter. The 01+ has a much deeper cup holder that's not as big.

Also, I believe that only the 99's have the "V6 HO" badge on the front fender. 2000+ all say "Ram Air V6". The 99's didn't have the Monsoon stereo system either.

I noticed that my 99 gear selector was flush with the console. In my 01 the gear selector is raised.

GM changed the rear view mirror with map lights. The one on my 99 was bigger and heavier but the lights covered more area. My 01 has this flimsy rear view mirror with these little map lights that does nothing.

I really liked the tire pressure monitor because if one tire fell below 5 or 10 psi then the light would come on. Also, it saved my rim from getting bent on the highway once. I knew to pull over right away when the light came on and that tire had almost shredded by then.

The tire pressure monitor saved my butt a couple times when I had a nail/screw in my tire. There was just enough air left in the tire to get to the nearest air pump. I filled it and immediately went to get the tire fixed. With out it, I would have been at the side of the road putting that stupid banana tire on in rush hour traffic.

I was told that the tire pressure monitor uses the ABS to monitor the tire pressure. And is supposed to let you know when a tire becomes 7-10 psi less than the other tires. Is this really the way it works on the GA?

I knew the tire pressure monitor was dropped (Bummer too, it WAS a handy thing. It was always right on the 99, if it went off, a tire was low. Saved many a tire too.), and I'd noticed most of the minor cosmetic changes mentioned, but what I was wondering was, what, if anything was changed that wasn't obvious? Suspension, tranny, computer and such. So far, under the hood, the only change I've SEEN, is the vacuum line to the power brakes has been moved. Otherwise, it looks pretty much the same... I'm hoping all the problems that were standard on the 99 were fixed. Things like the intake gasket, the window regulator, etc...

Ok, from the idiot that has probably sold 50 of the '99-'05s over the past 5 years...here's my take...

1) '00+ lost the fabric on the door panels. Also, '00+ GTs traded the "V6 H.O." badges for "Ram Air V6"
2) '01+ have the slightly changed gagues that have the red line going around the perimeter.
3) '01+ got the optional Monsoon CD/Cassette, and also got different 15" alloy design. Cassette was phased out of the Monsoon for '03 in favor of MP3 capability.
4) '99-'00 SE2s and '01 SE "Solid Value" models had the nice multi-spoke 16" alloys. In '02, the Chrome Techs from the GT became the optional SE wheel. SE2 designation came back out in '03, signifying a loaded SE with leather (first time for an SE)
5) '02+ SEs replaced the 2.4 with the 2.2 as standard.
6) Halfway through '02, all GTs and SEs lost the side badges. SC/T package was dealer installed only, became factory option for '03. Also halfway through '02, the revised 3400 intake gasket debuted. Also, some GTs got the "better" (IMO) wheel design, rather than the traditional Chrome Tech. My '02.5 had the old Chrome Techs. I never did figure out why some came through with the new design, and some with the old!!! We even had '04s that still had the old design!!!
7) '03+ GTs: Lost manual lumbar, lost variable-effort steering, changed the type of cloth. SE coupe dropped after '02. Also got a CRAPPY standard stereo, too.
8) '03+ SEs: Lost standard ABS/TCS/tire pressure monitor, got cheaper upholstery. Also gone was the body cladding. The SE2 package was revived, and included standard leather, Solid Value Package (moonroof, chrome techs, Monsoon), leather wheel with audio controls, full power seat.
9) XM debuted in '03.
10) '05 SEs were for rental fleets only, only as SEs and SE1s. GT coupes were the only Grand Ams available for retail sales.

I'm half asleep, so I may have missed an item or two...but that's more or less the changes!!!!

The 01+ got different bolts holding the intake manifold. This rectified a chronic problem of the bolts loosening on the 99-00 3400 engine.

Intake manifold changed where the EGR mounted to it in 2000, and they switched from 19lb bosch injectors to 22lb delphi injectors. Those were big changes people. 2001 got a revised fan speed regulator for the HVAC to rectify an issue with it burning out and mid way thru '01 they started using a revised fuel pump/sending unit assembly to fix the hot start problems they were having. Thats all mechanical wise I can think of ATM... most everything else's been mentioned already.

Oh yeah, the car got the Alero mirrors (all in black) for '02...
