When Ford’s next-generation Mustang arrives in another 20 months or so, it will come into a market devoid of competition. As General Motors gives up the pony-car fight, it leaves the American-built sports-car mass market to the people from Dearborn who created it some four decades ago.
So what do we really know about the 2005 model Mustang, due to market in fall 2004 (a delay from original plans that had the new ’Stang arriving next spring as a 2004 model)? First off, if spy shots are any indication, the traditional 2+2 coupe will get a stunning new retro-ish wrapper, drawing most of its inspiration from meaty late-’60s Mustangs as Ford design chief J Mays dips once again into the historic Ford styling well for cues. Envision a full-out version of the fastback Bullitt Mustang beefy-trim treatment for a strong mental picture, along with a convertible version. Alumi-num reportedly may be used in place of sheet molded composites for hood, trunklid and ground effects on some models.

Underpinning the new body is Ford’s best chassis, the DEW platform, already in use in the Lincoln LS, Jaguar S-Type and Ford Thunderbird. For the Mustang, engineers shorten the overall chassis but retain the long wheelbase that puts the front wheels BMW-close to the front bumper.
Then there’s the heart of the car—the engine. Sources say an affordable version will still be available with a V6, likely the 215-hp 3.0-liter used in other models such as the Taurus. V8 rip will come from the 260-hp 4.6-liter found in today’s Mustang, but engineers are busy boosting the engine’s output into the 280-hp range. SVT Cobras will pack a higher-output 4.6-liter V8—as do current Cobras—but the next Cobra could punch out 400 horses. SVTs are also rumored to be in line for F1-style paddle shifters linked to a six-speed tranny.

Look for some of this speculation to be laid to rest when Ford shows its Mustang concept at the Detroit auto show in January, and begins making final plans for a showroom debut timed to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the splash the original made back in 1964

Umm...eww? wtf It looks like a boxier version of the new Caddy XLR. I was actually just starting to like the latest gen. of Mustangs too.

What is up with the trendy retro look? Yes it is coming close to one of Ford's anniversaries but Mustang's are go-fast cars that appeal to a younger generation (at least from what I can see). The lastest T-bird was a success due to it's retro look because of it's appeal to an older, more conservative generation. Ahh well, we'll see how they sell. Maybe the fact that you can get an SC'ed V8 will sawy my opinion

...i personally think that it's the rear-end that looks odd... from the side profile the car doesn't look all that bad... but that rear... it's just ugly!!

Guess the Focus Platform was eitehr scrapped or just a rumor. D'oh... Oh well still looks smaller. Fugly IMO too. Ford ruined the look of the mustang back in the 70's-80's...

Sometimes things that I dont like eventually grow on me, unfortnately for Ford, I will never be alive that long enough.

Yech! Why so many ford haters??? Mustangs are about all we got left to compare to imports now (No flames please, we can't compare the corvette or viper, way to expensive)
and it doesn't look all that bad, except the rear end. I'm sure they'll hear it from people and change it around to a backup plan the've got sitting around or something.

i am a Ford guy, but that just isnt right. Blind people might like it, but for those of us with our sight, that rear end has to go. its freaking horrible. Atleast it will have some horse power anda new 6 speed to help ease the pain. and hey, i guess you wont see the ass end of the car when your in the drivers seat. lol

I dunno....I love Mustangs, espically classic's (64.5-73's) but this one looks abit odd. And that backend should go away.

But remember guys, theres no Mustang icons, or anything on that car. I'm sure its a concept car but its prolly like the Mustang Mach3 from 1993. Interesting car, but almost nothing at all like what went into production.

Plus an updated platform (The FOX-body chassis is older than me!), even more power, a retro-ish look (I think they did an excellent job w/ the T-bird) and all kinds of goodies.

I have always been a stang fan, but what the heck do they think there doin. I think they should spend somemore time under the hood instead of changing the body style. I hate to be the one to admit it but they have been somewhat lacking in the HP department for a few years now. And like everyone else said that backend needs to go.

I dunno about that because a) that is a very developed concept and isn't as radical in power as the mach 3 concept was (had like a 500+ hp supercharged v8 I believe) b) it seems like it fits the Lincoln LS platform very nicely, and that is what the next Mustang is slated to use.

Hmm developed? Maybe...but as far as not as radical in power, we don't whats under that hood. Not until the North American Auto Show coming up here anyways...I suppose we'll see how things turn out.

My point is that they would have made it a strong point that the engine has 500 hp or something if it was a radical concept, but they just claim a somewhat modest 280, and the pics seem to be an advertisement almost. When is the last time you saw someone like that in a picture of a GM concept car like an SC/T Grand Am? I can easily see that as the next mustang, as sad as it may seem. Remember, they want to break as many ties as possible from the old platform because it is basically over 20 years old.
