Ok here is my problem. The heat on my grand am was acting weird all weekend. It would come on and turn off. I thought I had a coolant leak so I replace the hoses etc. Anyway long story short after doing this a code came up and said I had a missfirfe in cylinder one. I pulled the plug and and it was covered in water. Then I looked at the exhaust white smoke and water dripping out of my tail pipes. Got the car towed to the dealership and they said the head gasket went. Water was entering cylinder 1 and 4. They claim they should be able to fix this without putting in a new engine is this possible or should I not trust them ?

I had the same problem. I thought it was the infamous LIM gasket, but it was a head gasket. It got replaced under warranty though. Be prepared to pay a lot. The bill for mine would have been about $975 (Canadian).

my question is how can I be sure that the engine was not damaged ? This is under warranty but I just want to protect myself. I also had the LIM gasket replaced twice prior to this happening.

I would have to say that the head gasket going is rare. You 2 are very unlucky but at least both of you had/have warranty.

I had a similar situation when the water pump went and the LIM gasket failed. In both situations, I had the dealership fix it. Part of the job was a cleaning of the cylinders and a radiator flush. Hence the reason it cost so much. Dealerships don't usually skip steps to save you money. Usually they like to add extra steps to get more money out of you.

Well I just got off the phone with the warrenty company. They are putting in an engine with 14,000 miles so I am happy with that. Considering the old engine had 83,000 miles.

Bonus! Almost 70k less miles.

Now you get to re-experience all the GA's common engine problems all over again.:D

Just kidding. Way to go.

Find out what year that motor is coming out of, you dont wanna deal with a LIM leak after going through this.

What year engines should I avoid?

1999 - 2005.

It doesn't really matter what year. Mine was a mid-year 2002 and I still had gasket problems. I think my LIM was on it's way out when I got rid of the car.

IIRC they started using the good gaskets in 03. If you search around here you will find the right year they changed it.

They were supposed to have changed the gaskets for 2002.... Apparently the new gaskets suck too. lol
