Has anyone tried tuning thier cars on 89 oct? If so, what mods u running and what kind of power u putting down. My tunner is on the way and tryin to get a head start, plus gas here in phoenix is getting really high. So, I'll try tuning on 89 until/if it goes back down.

Thanks for the help

You're kidding, right? What's the price difference between 89 and 92 or whatever.... at MOST 10 cents? (at least around here) That's an extra $1.50 when you fill your tank. If you're breaking the bank with that, you should look into a new hobby.

If you're supposed to run higher octane, just do it.

Well... you could still get a lot out of a tuner by tweaking the transmission settings, the ignition timing, fueling etc, even on 87 octane. Yes, 89 octane would be better... but like Dr said if you're going to do that why not just go ahead and use 91+ octane? You'll get more out of it in the long run. Doing performance mods isn't going to exactly help your gas mileage anyway, but once you get a good tune on the pcm that can gain a little bit back. Just my $.02

ROFL. And here I am adding 65# injectors, LS6 MAF and possibly a 3-bar MAP. What fuel economy?

ok, I should have posted the question alittle different. Like I said, has anyone tried it? By the post so far I'll take it as a no. I got simple bolt on stuff for now and don't really need to run 91. Thanks for the positve out look AaronGTR.

Basically, the faster you make your car, the more money your car will cost in gas. After all that's what modifications do, they suck more air and thus make your car use more gas. Like Aaron said, you can make your shifts a little firmer and get your fans to turn on when you turn your car off, but any hp you make by tuning isn't pulling free energy. It's using more gas. The only two real mods you can do to make you go faster without using more gas are...

1. Underdrive pully, takes power from accessories instead of using more gas.
2. Build your car to be more areodynamic.

You can definitely tune for lower octane than you're running. For the mods you have, you could probably tune for 87. Just don't do your tuning running 91 and you should be ok.

In the end, your timing will be lower, but as long as your not gettin' any knock, you'll be ok. Don't expect to beat any civics though...LOL

Thanks for the input, I'm not tryin to build a street drag, just make it a little quicker than it is. By the feed back I'm getting I'll go with my first thought and tune it on 91. Not to worried about the civics, I have a second car I'm working on to take care of them, its a 77 buick. Once the motor is done I hope to put down 800 to 900hp at the wheel.

Ok, how about this... a proper tune can minimize the decrease in fuel milage while still increasing power output. lol

While I don't have a grand am, my car is tuned and I can use either 93 or 89. It doesn't matter. I'm guessing if a car with 175hp more than a grand am can do it, then why not your car?
