View Full Version : Just what I was waiting for....a 30th GA!!!
Jason E

Knowing that 1973 was the first year the GA was produced, I was hoping we'd have a 30th GA....and we do  I was just reading one of my GM dealer mags...and I hope I'm not late to the party announcing this...I don't think anyone here has posted about it! Here's the stats...
1) 2 30th badges on the doors (where the 75th logos were on '01s)
2) 1 badge each on the seats, right below the headrest
3) GT1 Solid value equipment (says 30th production will replace normal GT1s from January to June)
4) XM Radio
5) Chrome "oval within an oval" exhaust tips, "inspired by the SC/T Grand Am SEMA vehicle"...sorta look like Borla tips.
6) And here's the kicker...the new color available is sunburst orange :D I can't tell if its the same as the SEMA SC/T or not...but it looks damn close!!
It also says that all normal Grand Am GT colors are available as well, and this new orange will be a normal production '04 model. SC/T package is available as well.
Hehe...an orange Grand Am...a 30th no less. Dare I put my GA up for sale to have another 30th? Call me corny...I think having an orange 30th GA to go with a white and orange 30th Z would be too cool :D

You're right.. the 30/30 combo would be very cool!

Please tell me they did something for under the hood.
Because... "badges... we don't need no stinking badges!!!!"

honestly... Pontiac is just milking this 30th anniversary thing because technically the GA hasn't been produced for 30 years... the original Grand Am ran from 1973 to like 1977 or 1978... Pontiac resurrected the name in 1985 and has been producing the car continuously since then... not really a true 30th in my opinion... hopefully it will at least look cool... if i were Pontiac i'd just wait until 2005 and make the 20th anniversary :)
MysteriousGT1
12-10-2002, 05:52 PM
Hopefully they don't design it like all the other New cars these days...And make it look like the Original...that would make the GA a Boat! wtf
Jason E
12-10-2002, 05:53 PM
I thought that too....I mean, the average consumer has no concept there ever was such a thing as a '70s, RWD GA. But, techically, an '05 20th anniversary wouldn't necessarily be accurate. Pontiac may look dumb by saying "well, we know we didn't produce them from '80-'85 (I believe they made the originals straight through '79), but well, we missed 5 years, so lets not count the previous ones.
I see what you're saying entirely...who knows, maybe they even looked at it that way!! Another way to look at it is, it gives them an excuse to sell more as popularity begins to die towards the end of the model's life cycle
Regardless, I am thinking about doing one...and it would have to be orange lol. I can retail mine for $15k in the spring...and depending on what the incentive is and the MSRP is on the 30th, I could walk away with a 30th for $17-17,500...not too shabby :D
Although, I could just build more equity into mine, and sell it for an '05 when the time comes...decisions decisions :) Problem is, I love my car, and I wanna do some things to it...which won't go over so well if I sell it quick. I don't know :(

12-10-2002, 06:27 PM
I would trade mine in for a GA that's Sunburst Orange in a heartbeat!!!
Mike3800
12-10-2002, 06:39 PM
I'd even be stupid enough (in my situation) to buy another GAGT if it was Oarnge!! Still no blue GT? THAT would be interesting too!!
Jason E
12-10-2002, 06:56 PM
Right here with ya Mike...
My first choice for a color would NOT be black, even though thats what I own. My 1st choice would be the navy blue that came on '02 'Birds and Maros...so pretty. Next would be Polo Green, followed by black...
But then of course, this orange thing comes in :D
I decided my game plan. As soon as I can, I'm going to order 3 30th Grand Ams...2 as orange coupes, and 1 as a polo sedan. Order one coupe as a full SC/T, and one with the SC/T spoiler only. I will spring for the spoiler, but the whole hood too? If it was fucntional, I would for sure...but if there is a chance RK Sport will have a functional RA hood, I'd rather spend the $$ on that.
If I can swap from mine to a 30th for 2-3k...I'm gonna do it. It depends...if they keep the 3k rebate, or dare I say go to 4k the way they have on '02s? The problem is, I wish they weren't all going to be GT1s...I don't need leather, nor do I even like it that much.
But to own an orange Anniversary Grand Am? I'll deal :D I'll try to scan the pics soon. I can't get the thought out of my head...a nice pic of an orange 30th GA with my Z...mmmm...purty :)

He wants a matching one

Jason E
12-10-2002, 10:37 PM
75th anniversaries??? Um, those REALLY weren't much of a unique package...no offense to 75th owners. All they were was a special group of options, normally available otherwise, with 75th logos in the seats and dealer installed (thats right...I made the outside of our 75ths into 75ths :D) door logos. That was it.
At least this is an effort to do something a LITTLE different. Unique color, all one specific model, nicer logos in and out...I guess it isn't that much different, but different enough :)

I love it that the 30th is fully loaded like the 75th was. But I see what your saying. Some people may want the 30th, but not with leather. But I think thats how gm does all their anniversary cars. The grand prix was like that last year, fully loaded. And I would think your 30th z is fully loaded as well. Anyway, so the orange color will be available next january. And you mention full sc/t. Do you mean the whole package? Front spoiler lip, side skirts, and rear skirt. Is that what you mean by full?
Oh, this was talked about a little before but a thread was not started for it and it was sorta in the rumor stage. We didn't know what it would have. Thanx for the info.
Jason E
12-11-2002, 08:51 AM
No problem :)
To clarify...
By meaning the full SC/T package, I meant that which was already available...aka the hood and spoiler only. Sorry for the confusion.
I do see what you mean about anniversary cars being fully loaded, but this is the first one I am aware of where EVERYTHING gets brought to the party. For instance, AFAIK, you could get my 30th Z with power nothing!! Its a separate option package. 40th GPs last year could be had without sunroofs, GTs didn't need the On Star package with the onboard computer (I know, I didn't order any...a $28,500 GT :(), heated seats, Bose stereo, etc. You could mix and match what you wanted. I frigged up hardcore when ordering one 40th...forgot the sunroof. We NEVER order a GP without a roof :D Thankfully we sold it to another dealer...
Converesely, as GT1s with Solid Value package, these puppies have everything plus leather. I would be more than happy to walk out for $1,000 to $1,500 less and get my car as a GT with cloth. But hey, either way, its gonna be a sweet car. The only thing that scares me is, do I dare stock up much on $24,500 GT1 and $25,600 GT1 SC/Ts???? Thats major sticker for a Grand Am....especially when you consider the '04 GP will be out soon (granted, not as a coupe :rage: ) in a similar starting bracket. I'd still rather own the GA, as I like the smaller size, 2 door, etc...but I wonder how the public will respond.
Opinions?
Jason E
12-11-2002, 08:54 AM
BTW, to clarify one more thing....I THINK those prices are going to be somewhat accurate. Not sure though. To wit: Currently a GT1 Solid Value SC/T goes for $25,100 or so. The mag claimed their "cost" was somewhere around $300 for the package, whatever that means....so assume maybe a $495 package price? Thats where I came up with these approximate numbers.

GA will always outsell the GP because of price and Mary Kay (seriously) but I am sure Mary Kay won't be buying any Oarnge GA's!! Normally I'd like the GP better, we'll see when all of this hits the showroom, pictures only tell part of the story.
I am pretty dissapointed with only a 4 door GP. Just because the 4 door outsells the 2 door doesn't mean they should KILL the 2 door!!! Damn, no wonder the F-body is gone!!! Psyco man calling those shots!! :rage:

Amen to that...
When I called my GM district rep to bitch about the cancellation (like it would do any good...), I was told that even though GP coupe sales were still running 20% of total GP sales, that because the coupe segment has steadily fallen every year since '89 (which had 68% coupe sales), they felt no need to keep the coupe.
I'd like to have the last 3 GP buyers I sold GPs to call them up and let them know how they felt...all 3 bought coupes, solely because they knew going forward there would be no more. Pontiac's theory is that the GTO will take the place of coupe sales...but I ask you...
How the HELL can a $30+k RWD V8 car replace a $25k V6 FWD car for that mid-20,000 coupe buyer? RIGHT....

A cosmetic package, without a performance upgrade? Why bother. Without some type of performance package(SC,etc), it really doesn't matter what color GM comes up with. Appearance packages just don't cut it. More horsepower and torque must be on the menu. GM has been playing around with this Supercharger for 3 years. It's time to put one in a production Grand Am. A 30th Anniversary GA with an SC package in Suburst Orange, would be the way to go.;)

I don't even care if it had a blower...extrude hone the heads and intake, make it run on premium, have it bump out 200-205hp, and I'd be thrilled. Problem with a blower is, how much more would the car cost?? Another $1,800, which is the cost of a GTP vs GT with the same equipment??? That puts a loaded SC/T GT1 with a blower up from $25,300 currently to like $26,800....square in baseline GTP territory...
It would be awesome, but what would the cost be??? I WOULD be intrigued to see one though...I don't mean to be a pessimist.
And hey, don't knock appearance-only packages...some can be cool. I know this from personal experience  The problem with doing more HP in special editions I've learned, GM has to spend millions just to re-certify another engine....and they hate to spend all that $$....
Now, what I would advocate is bring this engine out this year, for the 30ths, then make it a regular GA GT engine next year, to re-coup more of their investment. Then again, no one asked me :D

I agree. I also agree with whoever said they should have waited til 2005 and released a 20th Anniversary edition instead. Nobody really likes the 70's Grand Am, and it was put out of production. The name was resurrected in '85, so 2005 would have been a cool time to release a special package. Then it would even have had more power over this current generation. I just don't think anyone's going to or should lust after this GA, especially with the 75th anniversary on the same body style.
Honestly, when I see one, I'll end up saying "eww, my car in Orange... same power, same handling, ugly color... useless badges." Same problems I have with the GP's special editions packages the last few years. Roof rails, come on...

There are several things that are wrong with the car- most of them because I was not told of the changes from 2002-2003. I ordered a 2003 because it had HID headlights. Other than that, I was told that the car was exactly the same as the 2002's. But, in actuallity, it is not. The engine has been changed (downsized), torque reduced and some otehr stuff. I have not been happy with the car ever since I picked it up. I have wanted to get rid of it since day 2. I really regret trading my gt1 in. Oh well. As the quote in the Pontiac Dealership said "9 out of 10 people who test drive a Pontiac buy a Pontiac, people who sell their Pontiac miss their Pontiac." That is so true. I hope to be able to get rid of the celica and be able to get a 2003 GT1 30th aniversary edition. Going to the dealership on Monday to see what the details of the car are and what they might give me for my Celica. Later. shawn

yeah, i can agree to that. Driving a grand am gt1 for a day and taking it back was hard. I loved driving it and everything about it even though it was a used 2001 with some problems. So hopfully, I can get into a 30th as well next year. I saw the celica at the dc auto show a few days ago but I didn't care to look to much at it or even sit in it. I saw the tail lights were slightly different but I didn't know the engine was downsized. That's a disappointment. The Nissan 350z on the other hand interested me and is pretty good inside.

Is this car the same car that will become availiable either March 1, or March 31? I looked at the literature for the 30th earlier in the year, and I thought that the Orange wouldnt be availiable until March 1 or March 31- cant remember which. Hopefully soon- I convinced Toyota to buy my celica back, and I need a grand am to replace it. later
sorry, I meant to type......"the car has been being built for a month"......production started Jan. 2 right?......And I thought just the orange won't be available till March....I want black so I thought I should be able to pick one up very soon if not right now.....but I don't see any in the lots here......
*shrug*
EDIT: what happens to the cars GM builds like the SC/T's.....Are they ever auctioned off or anything like that? Do they just Crush them? that would suck....I'm not asking about prototypes...but more of the hopped-up versions like the fleet of SC/T's.....They are relativly stock cars.....I can't imagine they just get thrown in the trash after a few years....Only thing really different in them is a GM blower and tranny....maybe a couple interior parts and stuff.....

 They are all non-saleable scrap vehicles that at some point become very, very short.
:nono: :duh: :nono: That is a damn shame. So will I be able to get a black 30th before March? I know I can't get an orange one before that......but I thought I sould be able to find a black one now....
Oh! What is up with the XM antenna? I hate that thing can I take it off or is it drilled into the roof? Can I get a 30 th w/o XM at all??

Is the XM drilled through the roof? I just don't want that antenna on the roof...or a hole for that matter.

Well, the wires have to go through somewhere so I think it's a given that there's a hole. If you're lucky the hole might be right against the windshield and might be easy to plug with a rubber plug or something and not show too much. My guess is that it's going right through the roof though and that there's no easy way to take it off without something showing or expensive body work.
You could always take it off and put a blue LED instead, the ricers'll get jealous :D
That really ****es me off! I don't want some damn shark fit on my roof!!! Do all of you agree that it looks gay? Or is it just me?

yeah, it certainly looks awful where gm placed it. I don't understand how GM can place the XM antenna on the rear-center of the roof of the impala and monte carlo but place it on the grand am on the front-center of the roof. It's just ridiculous. Unless it's because of the sunroof. The sunroof does go over the roof of the car so maybe part of the glass would interfere with the antenna. But I don't think that would be a problem. I have seen the sunroof fully open and it does not come that close the the back of the roof. I just don't get it.

HEY! If you read my most recent post in the "found this on another site" thread...my friend said he saw a NEW GA, black, with 5-spoke wheels at a dealership near him. Maybe some are coming with Eagle 077's!!??
EDIT: I emailed my buddy to see if he goes by that dealer on a regualr basis, if so to get a digital pic of the car.

That's a crock...if it is that secret you wouldn't have been told as a general society member.
Rule #1: If there is something that absolutely cannot be dispersed to those who need not know, only those that are involved with that "thing" will know what is going on.

If that is the 30th that they are releasing to the general public, I want one NOW- not in march. That is a sweet lookin car. I hope the quality has been improved since 2001. I really really like the rims too- look great with the orange. For whatever it is worth, the literature that I saw at the dealerships showed the car with the "torqued" chrome techs on it.

This only means, one of the various SC/T cars was sent to the crusher. I wonder if it was the original RED SC/T concept? Also, you can see the part numbers stamped on the fabricated pipes. The SC is an old Eaton Gen 3 SC. I know that, because it has an external Bypass Acutator. The SC looks refurbished.

FYI...GA's are going pretty damn cheap through carsdirect.com!! $19,000 for a GT1
I hoping that with my GM discount and the points on my GM card I will get it for less than that,,,,,,i hope!
carsdirect said my trade-in value is between $5,730 and $6,590
WTF!!!!

That's about right ECAP....used vehicles in general are terrible right now, add to that our cars are saturated in the used lots...and we just aren't going to get much.
GM discount (GMS) price for a 30th GA is approximately $23,000 if you didn't know. Take your rebates/trade in from there and that should be your on-site buying estimate. I can't say I know of many people who have bought a new car online, but the one I have said it was fantastic. And carsdirect.com does a helluva job competing.

Take it to carmax. They usually give you up to $2000 more than what the dealer would give you.

Not sell pontiacs, I meant that he sells his grand am to carmax. In other words, Carmax would Appraise the vehicle and give the customer a sheet of paper that has the price they are willing to buy the car for. That is what I am going to do with my car. They suck with used cars...price wise, but purchasing cars from the customer is better than what the dealer would give.

Nope. They will however, deduct $150 from the price if you are not going to buy a car from them. But ya, you don't have to buy a car from them to sell the vehicle. That's the good part. I have had my car appraised by dealers and by carmax, and carmax was about $1800 - $2000 better than the dealer's appraisal.

How much do you owe on it? If you are willing to take the losses, then I would say trade it into the dealer. You want to do a lease?

I optioned one out in carsdirect.com and am going to take that price up with me on Friday when I go to finish filling out the paperwork for my 03 orange 30th GT1. I will have to see if they will match that price- probably not, but its worth a try. Will let you know how it turns out. later

Retailers stores don't match online pricing because they know they can't hang with it. The car market could be different, but I wouldn't expect it to be.
What I want to know is, on carsdirect.com...can GM employees(and family) who are eligible for the discount get that off their prices???
