has anyone had any experience with the egr valve? can it be cleaned instead of replaced, and if so how do you clean it?

Well on these greatly designed GM EGR valves that always build up carbon, and stick open you can clean them. what I do is take it off and get some intake/carb cleaner and PB blaster spray that in there while pushing the valve up and down. Keep spraying both in there from time to time untill it moves freely. Then let it sit and soak for a while and you'll be good to go.

was it hard to remove the egr valve? and did you have to replace the gasket?

no, and yes

Can you buy just the gasket?

The gasket can be bought and they make these gaskets with little wire mesh over the "intake" port of the valve.

So i can get just the gasket at like any parts store autozone, pepboys, advanced auto, napa etc?

Yup. And don't forget to ask for the one with the mesh on it, especially if you've had carbon chunk problems before. Should run somewhere around $5-10 most likely.
