I bought a set of 6.5" component speakers to place in the front doors of my 2000 GAGT Sedan. I know plenty of you have done this before and I wanted your input. My speakers require a 2-1/4" depth, what size (1" or 1/2") speaker spacer does everyone recommend to install these speakers in my doors. Do I need to make any other modifications such as cutting metal and/or installing sound deadening material? I'm hoping to install them this weekend, but that's as long as the weather cooperates (no garage available for me).
Thanks!

Well it's not that easy. I thought that I would do it myself but if found a shop that made the new mounts and installed it all with dynamat for $105. $70 of it was for the labor and the parts and then $35 for the dynamat. here are some pics I am not exactly sure how he mounted them. I have to take the doors off and get a final shot anyways. i will let you know when I get more time.

I'm not sure what the exact mounting depth is on our doors. I can tell you it is more of a project than one might suppose, one of my installers (13 years in the business) took almost 2 hours to install SpyhunteR's new sep's, and that was an experienced installer with a full shop.
Definately get the Dynomat or whatever brand damping you choose, it makes a world of difference.

Actually it was pretty easy for me at least. I bought the Universal one inch depth extenders fro partsexpress.com and then made sure they were centerd over the oval hole mounted them on then mounted the 6.5 inch speaker in and I was good to go. About 2 hours including taking apart and clean-up

2000GA,
Thanks for your input. I knew it couldn't be that hard to do. My speakers basket's aren't that big, so I'm sure I won't have to do much modifications (if any) to the existing openings. I plan on installing Dynamat (10"x10" sheet) over the opening, then installing the 1" spacer, then the woofer. I'm just hoping the tweeter in my set fits nicely in the factory pod. Did you have any problems there?
Thanks again!

The only problem with the pods was that some of it needed to be shaved down. The installer just took a dremel tool and sanded the tabs off then glued the tweeter in. Depending on the size of your tweeters you might be able to get away with just pushing them in and gluing it.

i made a 1" spacer and i put my speakers in in about 10 minutes on each side
if you have a router and a circle jig you should have no probs

I didn't have any wood cutting tools so just bought the spacers. I didn't have to cut any metal frome the door away either but that varies from speaker to speaker. Also I didn't have any problem with the tweeter being too tall eitherbut thats another one of those speaker variations too.

For my 6.5" mids I used a Metra adapter, part# 82-3300
I had to do a little trimming of the interior door panel to clear the speaker, but it was nothing serious at all. No cutting of metal involved.

For my tweeters, I bought a pair of the plain sail panels (No tweeter hole), then used a hole saw to flush-mount my tweets.

I just installed some 6.5 Kappa's with a mounting depth of around 2 1/8 (I think).. but 3" would be alittle much. I have pictures of the install, I'll post them tonight or monday.

Yeah, 3" may be a little much. My components were like 2-3/4", I believe. They were a pain in the BUTT! You may be able to get 3" ones in, but be warned its tight.

Well their going in there one way or another. I like the 7mm one way xmax of the components. That way I'll have no midbass issues. I guess I'll have to form the enclosure behind the door panel and mount the speaker on the door surface. grrrr

Everything worked out okay, but I did have to cut some of the door panel because the speaker magnets were too big.

The Adire Koda component set. Only $250 on preorder right now to. They say it is less than 3", but don't give an exact measurement currently. They are designed for off-axis use also, perfect for doors.
