Which is better for winter here in michigan? The temps can get like almost zero. That also means i have snow and other stuff. or should i keep my stock air box for better winter performance? Once i figure it out itll be celbration time. ( i just wanted to find a way to put these cool smileys in here!)

Are you really serious about that question which is better CAI or WAI...for winter??
There really is no difference IMO of horsepower..

WAI??
You mean short ram or stock air box?
I had a short ram from ramairtech but it sucked. Created my own CAI and it is much better! As for winter or summer it doesn't matter COLD air=more horses. I have always been told for every one degree colder = one horsepower gain.
Wouldn't worry about snow or water either never heard anyone having problems w/ cai's unless they have been submerged in water up to thier head lights.

I ran my custom cai all winter, and had no problems. I live on a dune, on the lake too, so we got LOTS of lake effect.

I think he was considering safety maybe...
I wouldnt think a CAI would create any problems
I ran my CAI on my 94 all last winter, no problems.

someone said (i cant remeber who) that cool air is good for an engine but cold air is bad. So thats what i was asking. I know that nothing will get sucked up. i hear that in every CAI post i've ever seen.

I don't think it ever gets too cold, even in Michigan, for the air to harm a car. If you're concerned about getting snow on the filter, just remember this: if the roads are so high w/ snow that you're worried about getting the filter submerged in it, then you probably shouldn't be driving anyway. ;) ...BTW, your car looks like my evil twin (save for the hood scoops) and that signature quote rocks! :D

Actually, with a CAI and winter temperatures, you'll probably get the best performance out of your car. Find a track that's open late in the year, heat your tires up real good before you make your run, and you'll get one of your best 1/4 times!

What about a CAI at -40. That's like 215 horsepower lol. To add to his question where is the line when the air is too cold. BTW, I bottom out on snow every day at least twice. I just did coming to work today.
My fellow AK'n has a WAI but his hood is functional and blows cold air onto his cone. He hasn't had any problems with it. Some people put cardboard and now some aftermarkets for Fords are coming out with grill guards that actually slow the air into the stock WAI to help keep the interior warmer.

This is my first winter with WAI and I can't believe how hard my car pulls in cold air. CAI will pull even better.

Old thread!
CAI > WAI
But when is cold air too cold?

When you see coolant leaking from under all of the cars on the road (IMHO). I don't believe you have anything to worry about... It could be below 0, and it will still heat up once it hits the TB. I would be more concerned about not givin the engine too much hell when the block is still chilly...

Air doesn't get too cold for the engine, there is no point where the temperature will be too low to use a CAI. I switch to my WAI in the winter, because I like to keep the filter clean. There's no traction to use all the power anyways, so that not a factor.

I take out out my CAI for the winter just so it doesn't get destroyed with the snow and sand. I just kinda attach the cone to the MAF.

Yo dude.
I went through last winter here in michigan and have had no probs whatsoever. The car runs better and better the colder it gets. NO PROBS!
Yeah you will definately be fine. Just clean your filter before each winter season.

I dont mind cleaning my filter, its not the funnest thing to get to but it is by no means hard in anyway. Ya dont clean it often anyhow.

why bring back OVER a 2 year old thread in the first place?
How cold is too cold? too cold is when your gasoline freezes in your lines... not to mention numerous other things.

I had no idea it was 2 years old. How do ya know how hold a thread is anyhow?

The air in our cars always gets warmed up anyway before it enters the throttle body because of the antifreeze line they got going to the throttle body. It is there to purposely warm up the air going into the throttle body. The only way it doesn`t is if you do the throttle body coolant bypass mod but even then its still at least a little warmer just not as much as it would be with the line still hooked up.

The coolant bypass mod and the fact that coolant goes through is a farse. The air generally is flowing to fast to be majorly affect by the heat of the TB. It is the LIM/UIM and heads that heat it up if anything.

Agreed.. Thats why I got the TB shield... Got at least a 5 degree drop :win:
