Well first of all i want to start modding my car but i dont know if i shoud do it. I need u guys advice or opinion on this. I bought my car in october of 2005, used and it had 157k miles on it, now it has 165k on it. I dont know if i should keep it or sell it, the problem is that im a full time college student and i dont have that much money saved. This car cost me 3,300 and the exterior and the interior are in great condition, and the engine too but i dont know how long it will keep running. I wont lie ive had several problems with this car since i bought it. I was planning on buying a CAI first and then some 18 inch rims and some other stuff but i dont know if i should do it. What do u guys think i should do? any advice or opinions are more than welcome thanx

Why would you mod a car with 165k miles on it? Plus you're in college dont waste your money modding a car, drive it till it dies then when you get out of college and get a good job get a new car.

ya no point in modding it.. drive it to the wheels fall off :) I have 102k on my 1 GA, only major thing i had to replace so far was the wheel hub and power steering hose. and the other my second has 148k still running good

Drive it till it dies or until you graduate and can afford something more substantial to modify. Take it from me ... I wish I had never touched my car.

Why is this something that you would need advice on? I swear, why cant people think for themselves and not need e-friends to decide for them? Do whatever you want with it. It's your car. whether it has 1 mile or 200k miles, you can mod the thing if you want. Does it make sense to throw money into a car with 200k miles w/ problems? No, but who cares what anyone else thinks. In the end it's your car and choice.

It's called, trying to help someone out. If people asked, and actually followed the advice of a majority, or at least those they saw as knowing what they talk about, there wouldn't be so many people in this country in sh1tholes, on welfare, knee deep in CC debt, etc. Unfortunately some people can't think for themselves.

ok but there's a difference between helping someone out on a certain product or just telling them what to do. Like the infamous threads of "should i buy this intake......should I buy this pair of headlights", etc, regardless those things in the end are your decision, not the internet people. I dont know, maybe I just see it different because the internet would be the last place I would come to for advice.

AMRAAM4
06-15-2006, 12:05 PM
I actually think those threads are more like "what do you think of this product". They just don't know how to formulate correct paragraphs and plots. Like a majority of the American population can't.

You should see some of the sh1t I have come into me at the office from "experts" in areas that get paid way more than me

if someone asks maybe they just want opinions from people who have modded their cars. nothing wrong with asking, and nothing wrong with giving an opion, especially when asked.

ill give my opinion: dont mod it. i did mine, starting at 5 miles, and while i dont regret modding it, i find that im still wasting money on mods with 125k miles. my car runs like new, however, and i know its history. i also dont drive it daily anymore, so its not all wasted on a car that will die soon.

same your money, throw it in a savings account or invest. every time you get a few dollars and are tempted to buy something throw that money into an account. youll tank yourself for it when you graduate.

dont mod it to many miles...i only have 9k miles on mine so its still got a lot of driving ahead so why not...but in your case dont do it, save for college!

Because it's money better spent elsewhere, regardless of how many miles are on the car.

Well thanx for u guys opinions, an f**k noo im not studying art. Im asking this because this is a website were almost everybody owns a GA and some of u guys have modded ur cars and know more about cars than me. Everybody asks for opinions, why shouldnt i do it. And no Alex i havent had any problems with the hubs the problems that ive had with this car were with the passenger window and my power steering hose had a leak, but i fixed them already. Now the check engine light has come on and i already took it to auto zone to check it out and they said it needs a new oxygen sensor. Well guys im going to take u guys advice in not modding the car but i just wanted to put rims on it because i know im going to have this car for about.... i would say two more years thats when ill graduate from college and i dont want to be ruinning stock and let me just tell u theres a lot of GA here in my town and most of them are stock and i just want to stand out. What do u guys think?

mr_eh
06-15-2006, 05:51 PM
well, heres how i see it, theres only.... 1 fast 99+ grand am in the world, (sorry guys but 13s isnt fast)

and it cost him an arm and a leg and a long time building to get there....

and then theres a bunch of guys who have done appearance mods and their cars turned out cool, but it also cost them an arm and a leg to get there...

then theres a few people who got different cars to mod out....

if you just want to stand out, get a 3 inch muffler, some tintz and chrome rims i guess...

or simply realize the car modding game isnt for broke ass college students =v

but in all seriousness, if you have to ask other people what to do with your car, then you are

not

a

car

enthusiast

and thats coming from the slowest/most active racing grand am se coupe on hubcaps to a 400whp 11second dodge neon (on paper of course)

ViperGTSR

i know where u can get some rims man

im sellin a set. Ill sell em to ya cheap PM me

caraudiodave
06-16-2006, 12:17 AM
if you can get rims for cheap then do it, if thats what makes you happy, but if you want a car that looks different then get some tail lights and put the rest of the money in the bank.

if you come up with about 20k then ill give you my list of mods, and youll have a sharp GA, but itll then be worth maybe $3-4k. thats why where all saying its not worth it.

whats wrong with stock rims? they are reliable, good for all seasons, and you dont have to worry about pot holes or denting the rims. trust me having rims isnt all that great. its cool at first, then its gets old after a while.

I agree that it all comes down to the owner. I agree with people that you shouldnt mod it but thats our opinions. If you do decide to mod, do it to what fits youre taste and your budget. Dont do it to impress other people, do it to make yourself happy because thats what its all about. I myself am more of a performance over appearance person, no matter what kind of car you have theres always room for improvement. And Im only 16 and work at a petstore so I feel you with the money situation. Im saving to go to a tech school and hopefully someday be a certified GM tech. But either way get through school and when you make money in the future then you can do whatever.

honestly, do what you want man, mine is almost at 80k, ive had and modded it since 40k, and prob. will keeping doing little things here and there. EVerything is worth doing as long as you HONESTLY enjoy it. Is it financially worth it, NO, but niether is modding a damn Neon, but it is what Mr. Eh is into, and seriously, that is all that is important

06-16-2006, 06:26 AM
I would agree with most people with that high of milage don't stick a lot of money into it. Start saving money now for mods to a newer car once you get out of school. We all want nice cars when were young, but it's not worth going into debt over.
I don't see any problems modding a Ga if that is what you want to do, I plan on putting several grand in to mine this summer, but this is also what I enjoy doing and I want a fun daily driver.

Thanx guys for ur opinions. Alex i dont know what type of rims u have but i was looking for some black rims with crome lip i saw ones and there about 1,200 im going to give u guys the website so u can see them its http://www.r2sportwheels.com, there the ones on top of the home page the ones the BMW has on. And u Pasquale are u saying that im a broke ass college student S**t man at least im going to college i hope when i graduate ill have a better car and a faster one than ur neon. And im free to ask for opinions from other people that have the same car has i do. Well for the other people thanx once again and check out the rims and tell me what u guys think.

Those rims are nice on that website, but I think that once you put them on...the spokes will look to skinny.

caraudiodave
06-17-2006, 09:57 AM
dont spend 1200 on rims. try to find some for 500 or so. once you have rims it all keeps going. youll be glad you saved that 700 because then youll want exhaust, intake, lowering springs...and then youll afford it.

theres nothing wrong with being a broke college student. I am also one, and ive spent probably close to 15k-20k on my car.

frankys99ga
06-18-2006, 08:44 PM
Thats what i was thinking Brandon that maybe the spokes were going to look too skinny but i cant find some rims that i like and most of them that fit the car are like six spokes and etc. But i want some five spokes. But im going to keep looking.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they will. Keep saving and get these... http://www.r2sportwheels.com/wheels/DTR-2%20Silver%20copy.jpg . Another option, get the imitation mustang wheels...i've never seen them on a GA but I think that they might look pretty good.

frankys99ga
06-20-2006, 12:02 AM
which mustang wheels brandon? I saw ones in a if u can say a saleen and the rims that it had where bad ass but do they fit our cars?

I cant remember where I saw them...but I'm pretty sure they sell universal mustang wheels, or at least very similar wheels. Search around

if you are going to mod your car go to a drag strip and make a few passes if you never have. itll help you decide where exactly you want to put your money.

Like a few people have said already, just do what you want to do. Don't do it for other people, and if you want to do a few things and save the rest for a better car great. If you want to pour money into this car, that's great too, as long as you are doing it for yourself and you understand that you are modding a car with a lot of miles. I've tossed this question around in my head a lot too, my car has 141k on it. I decided to leave the expensive stuff alone and just do little things here and there that I can afford and that make it look better. There are a lot of appearance mods that you can do very cheap (right now I'm in the middle of doing my door panels). Then in a few years I'm going to take the money I have saved up and look at getting a 70's vette cause it's something I've loved ever since I've played with hotwheels cars. So do what makes you happy and what you can afford.

Mike3800
06-21-2006, 06:44 PM
Go into massive debt and lease a brand new car so you can look cool.

elim
06-21-2006, 06:46 PM
also purchase incredibly expensive rims and tires

GrandAmGT1996
06-21-2006, 09:37 PM
Then have mommy and daddy take over the payments

Mike3800
06-27-2006, 02:55 PM
Then put on a body kit pay for it with a credit card, and don't paint the kit to match the car cause you maxed out your credit card, get in a minor fender bender and don't fix it, take the insurance money to pay off the body kit.

GrandAmGT1996
06-27-2006, 04:43 PM
Then cut the springs so you dont have to buy lowering springs. Then only buy 2 rims because thats all you can afford, and just put them on until you can get the other 2. (Probably buying them with the credit card also)

Phuxed
06-27-2006, 06:28 PM
Then over-badge your windows with stickers for three types of products: ****, stuff that isn't actually on the car, and performance parts that you will never be able to afford...ever.

GrandAmGT1996
06-27-2006, 07:58 PM
Then tell people that you actually have those parts. Dont forget to get a cannon exhaust to fit in, and get a quick 50+ HP
