DETROIT — It looks as if Pontiac has another hot convertible on its hands: The 2006 G6 convertible is flying off dealer lots.

Pontiac spokesman Jim Hopson told Inside Line that the G6 convertible is selling at an average transaction price of $31,300 as of June. The G6 convertible has a base price of $28,490, including a $650 shipping charge. The G6 convertible is averaging five days on dealer lots.

"The '07s are already in production, and there shouldn't be an extended time for people to wait for the G6 convertible," Hopson said.

The car is built at the GM plant in Lake Orion, Michigan, on the same lines as the coupe and sedan models of the G6. Hopson said the plan is to build 15,000-20,000 2007 G6 convertibles, but the factory has the flexibility to build as many as 30,000-35,000 a year, or roughly 25 percent of total G6 volume.

Production of the 2007 Pontiac Solstice will begin at the end of June in Wilmington, Delaware. GM sold 17,000 2006 Solstices and will build 20,000 for the '07 model year. "The '07 Solstice is not sold out, but there is a waiting list of a couple of months," Hopson said.

He said the average transaction price for the '06 Solstice is approximately $24,000, more than $3,500 over the car's base price of $20,490. One of the top options on the Solstice is $795 chrome-plated aluminum wheels. Hopson said 25 percent of Solstice buyers add that item to the convertible. A turbo Solstice GXP will debut in the fall and account for about 40 percent of total volume, or approximately 8,000 units.

Perhaps the best news for Pontiac is the renewed interest in the brand on the West Coast. Pontiac says 2006 retail sales increased by 9.7 percent in Los Angeles over 2005 numbers and were up 16.9 percent in San Francisco in the same time period. "These are places we don't do traditionally well in," Hopson said. "It tells us we are starting to turn the corner and get back on people's radar screens."

About time for Ponti. Hopefully these cars dont age like our Grand ams or GM just got a whole bunch of more negative reasons people would rather buy imports.

PS- I dont see what the big deal is for the convertible G6, I still think it looks like Sh!t.

I've seen two convertible G6's around here, one in Rochester, and one in Troy. They're pretty nice looking cars IMO. One was white, and the other silver. I think color choice makes a big difference in how the car looks as a convertible. *sigh* I wish (along with hundreds of other people probably) that they had produced the convertible SC/T.

The brand needs these sales, but the ~40,000 sales that the two convertibles bring in is peanuts for the industry. Work still needs to be done until the brand is positive for most people.

I saw my first today... Not too bad lookin in person. The one I saw seemed to be Arctic white, which I didn't even think was available for the G6.

I think the title says it all. The Pontiac G6 is a sellout. They dropped all the unique styling Pontiac used to have and went with something that can blend in with all the Hondas, Nissans and Toyotas on the road. Personally, I liked the fact that my GT had some aggressive styling even if it didn't have the power to match. How often am I going to get to show off while driving to the grocery store anyway? At least the car looks tough and I can feel like I've got something to look at. The G6 is just another car in a sea of bland cars as far as I'm concerned. There are very few brand new cars out there right now that impress me enough to even consider trading in my GAGT for now.

I do enjoy hearing about Pontiac's success at least even if it's with a car I don't care for. if they are selling then at least the Pontiac name is still getting put out there and that gives me hope that the future models may someday return to the unique styling I've always loved. Maybe a redesign of the GTO can bring that muscle car feeling back to the arrowhead...
