Obviously I am new here. I got a 2000 Grand Am GT about a week ago and I was wondering how everyone else's gas mileage is. I am thinking something is wrong with mine, but I would just like to know what everyone else's is to base it on.

I get at least 300 for a full tank. I usually don't let my tank go under half, though, and I think I had like 280 at a 1/4 tank last time it got that low, so I think that averages at like 24 I think

After my modification on my car I get 300 -320 on a full tank. Before my modifications I was getting about 200.

I can knock down 30 MPG on the highway between 70 - 75 MPH.

in my SE, i got anywhere from 19-29.

Mirage85

20-26 depending on city/highway and for how long i get stuck in traffic, or if I do...

With my new exhaust, I seem to be getting a little better milage as well, about a mile to the gallon.

What are you getting?

When I had my GA, I could severely vary the mileage of a tank of gas. If I drove like a grandma, I could stretch the tank out to about 390 - 400 miles. If I drove hard and aggressively, I could get as little as 175 miles out of a tank.

Average though was 280 miles per tank.

I get about 270 give or take per tank, i've seen as little as 150, and as much as 400 something.. it all depends on how you drive

I have only filled it up once, it is averaged around 16 a gallon. I figure I would give it a few more times to really determine it.

Are you calculating it properly or are you just geussing?

Lots of sitting it traffic or lots of idle time.... or else you got something siriously wrong.

You did the math correctly? you didn't forget to reset the trip after filing up one time or anything?

I have a feeling he is guessing or not doing the math correctly.

If you arent guessing, how are you calculating it?

I take alot of short useless drives which usually consist of heavy acceleration and alot of stop and go. My average is usually somewhere around the 16-18. However, while thruway driving ive seen it in the high 20's.

I did reset before I left the gas station on the first fill up. What I did say before was an educated guess, it was before I actually stopped at the gas station for the second fill up. I was at 194.3 miles when I went to the gas station the second time. I wish I got a receipt for the first time, but I think I put in around 11.5 gallons when I filled up. I divided 194.3 by 11.5 and I got 16.9 miles per gallon rounded up.

ok. um. here's what ya do. fill up. reset trip odometer. drive a bunch of miles. around 200-240 fill up again. divide mileage by gallons you just put in the car. that = mpg.

i usually get around 240 per tank. never much more, never much less. usually 21-23 mpg's.

welcome to the board.

Regularly add fuel system cleaner/injector cleaner (every other tank of gas). Oil change every 3k miles, nothing special... car currently has 102k miles on it, runs very strong...

what fuel system cleaner/injector cleaner are you using? color? brand? price? picture? where you get it? if it works, im going to go buy me a damn case of it. i love my car.. but the poor mpg really makes me want to get rid of it sometimes. Its hard to afford putting $80-$120 of gas in the car a week.

Brand of gas you use?
mods? (i have a borla)
brand of oil?
anything else?

sorry to ask so many questions.. but if i can fix my car id be so damn happy!!! i used to get about 360 miles a tank.. now that i can deal with!

You do not get 500 miles a tank let alone a gallon.

No one would put "No joke" after a statement like that unless they were full of it. Your car probably gets worse mileage since it's the old out of all 99+ gagt's.

lol, well for one I meant 500 miles per tank. What did you mean by since it's the old out of all 99+ gagt's? That it's the first year of the model?

Anyways, I probably should of mentioned that that mileage is with my mom's '05 Civic Hybrid, which I am currently driving. So... yeah, gues that doesn't count, huh?

I tend to fill up at Sunoco and BP more than anywhere.

LUCAS injector cleaner rules the world. It cleans and lubricates.
Greased Lightning Fuel System Treatment/Cleaner (can't remember the correct name) works very well also.

Lucas you can find most places, (AAP, Murrays, Autozone, Pep Boys)

Greased lightning i've only found lately at Murrays and AAP.

Hey, I just accidentally put mpg instead of mpt.

And besides, I actually do get about 500 miles per tank right now, and that's why Hybrids are nice :)

Because a car gets worse mpg as it ages unless you keep it in immaculate condition and running order. And no, it doesn't count. There was no need to chime in with what a civic can get, because this is a thread for mileage on grand ams.

Try to avoid highjacking threads and post whoreing, all your gonna end up with is warning points and getting banned.

Wow thats not too great, i can get anywhere from 22 - 30 a gallon. Lately ive been able to do an average of 28 mainly cuz im extra careful on how much gas i waste. doing short trips all the time should at least give you 19 - 22. I see no point in doin hard accelarations unless you wanna have fun with your car. All that will get you is 15-23 a gallon.

I dont use fuel system/injector cleaners anymore, after i heard that some could reduce the life of your car i stopped using it. All i do to keep my engine clean is V-Power shell gas & keeping up on the oil changes & it should work fine. Some people think you dont really need to continue using higher octane but my mechanic says its the best thing to keep your car running smoothly. And seeing how gas prices are crazy, i might as well use the top gas for my car.

Either way doin stuff like exhust and CAI and a high flow cat system seems like it actually does work. Im goin to vegas in about 5 months so i also need as much help with MPG. 2100 miles roughly to get there.

I averaged 30 mpg the last couple of times I've taken it on the highway on long trips. I really can't believe how good it is on gas. But the worst I've ever seen is 26 mpg. And that was fighting a good stiff head wind. I usually set the cruise at about 80, and I'm not doing any hard driving. Around town, if I step on it a lot, the gas gauge goes down a lot quicker.
