I just did a break job on my car and replaced the rotors and pads on both sides of the front. Everything seemed to be working fine, but when I looked at the rotors after a test drive, one of them was heating up so hot it turned purple around the edges and the entire rim was extremely hot. I think a new caliper may be in order as I had one repair shop tell me it may be freezing up. Is this the cause? Should I just go ahead and replace both calipers on the front? Also, does anybody have the directions for this?
Thanks!!

Did you grease the sliders on the caliper? Sounds like it is stuck

If the caliper piston is freezing up that means it's not returning and is always keeping pressure on the pad. If the pad is constantly pressing on the rotor that would certainly cause those simptoms. It's not an uncommon problem with old calipers. It can make your rotors warp and it wears out the pads very fast on that side.
If thats the case you should replace it immediately. You only need to do the side that's sticking though. Not both. Replacing the caliper is fairly easy, but you have to disconnect the brake line so you'll need to bleed the line on that side. That's not hard either, but you do need to know what you're doing, so if you aren't mechanically inclined I suggest letting a shop do it.

you put the pads on backwads
the clips face the front one has no clip the other does.
The one with the clip face forwards onto the caliper.

Could also be a bad bearing. My sisters old car did what you described and it was a bad bearing

It was the caliper, we replaced it and everything is fine now.
