My dad was wondering if anyone on here might know the answer. He has a 2002 Chevy Suburban with roughly around 60k on the dial.

The problem he's having (and we're having trouble finding out) is everytime the A/C is on and he's accelerating from a stop, or even pushing the gas heavier then Granny speed, it sounds like a belt is slipping hardcore and it makes a terrible coughing sound that is completely audible outside the car. I remember we went to lunch and we were driving right past someone and he stepped on it and scared the crap out of the couple from the noise. Anyone have any ideas?

Yeah, my guess is the belt is just stretched out and needs replaced.

More than likely the A/C compressor has come apart internally. The noise you're hearing is from the A/C belt slipping on the pulley due to the high internal resistance of the compressor spinning. 95% of the time when you hear a loud "Chirping" when you blip the throttle it'll be the compressor. Denso compressors on '02 - '04 trucks are particularly bad about it.

You'll need a new compressor and an orifice tube at the least. Possibly an A/C belt and A/C belt tensioner. Make sure to have whoever fixes it checks out the fan clutch as well. A fan clutch that isn't drawing enough air across the condensor increases stress on the compressor a great deal.
