There were about 6 stolen cars around my town lately so heres my story:
The other night I got home around 12:45. I park in the driveway lock it and on my way to the house I see a white acura integra drive slowly past and think nothing of it.
So about 15 mins later I get ready to take a shower and go to bed. When I see the same teg driving back around the block. He pulls over puts the window down and looks around. After a few seconds he drives off, my neighbor calls me and says meet me outside. At this point im getting dressed and going outside with a bat (I was already having a bad day) low and behold he's parked at the end of the block. My neighbor comes outside and calls the police.
All of the sudden the guy sees us starts the car revs it and does a quick U-Turn the other way. This other guy in his civic that ws actually being looked at the night before got in his car and tried to chase him down but he was unsuccessful.
Looks like it's time for an aftermarket alarm.... things like this really piss me off!!!

That sux. I hate ****ing theives. It's sad that nowadays you almost have to have a car alarm installed. Sorry to hear about the "could've" story. You should've threw the bat at the back window of the car. :balla:

Don't let your insurance company know you don't lock it. They wont want to pay out if it gets stollen and they discover you were too lazy to lock it.

It's funny that you say this... this does indeed happen. It has happened enough times for me to know that it is true. I also know that I have enabled and disabled it without knowing... therefore sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't...
I'm not crazy, I swear

why even bother? is it really that difficult for you to press the lock button?

I know if you press the door lock button once it will chime and the doors will auto-lock about 7-8 seconds after the door is closed...that's the only "auto-lock" feature I know of on the GA. That and when you start driving...

Then he probably woulda sued you for personal injury and won. Sucks, but thats the kinda world we live in now. You can't even protect yourself and your possessions on your personal property without someone suing. So much for freedom huh?

I'd have to check but I believe that the locks on our cars have different settings. IIRC there are like three different settings programed and you select which one you want by messing with the lock button.

Yeah, that sounds soooooo :amraam: but you're right. Can't do **** w/o gettin in trouble yourself. It's sad, my dad is one of the most straight-laced people ever, but even he's said before...people need to let some **** go (mostly reffering to kids gettin in fights at school) because there's people that just need a good asswhoopin lol

I just had that happen to me last week! I Went to the car wash and the dude was outside drying my car. Then out of no where, I see the rear lights blink twice and heard a chirp. I thought the guy had my keys in his pocket and he accidently hit the lock button on the remote. BUT, when he was done I walked over to the car and it was locked. I said hey, can I have my keys and he said "they're in the car". The car was locked and the keys were in the ignition! Fortunately, I was able to call my gf and have her bring the extra set over.
Now I just need to find out how to turn that feature off. When I do, I'll post it.

It should tell you in the owners manual. iirc mine doesn't have that auto locking, but it does let you choose to have the horn beep or not beep when you lock it. Owners manual tells you exactly how to set it.

Unfortunately, we don't have the owners manual. I'll have to go out and find one.

I'm gonna have to dig mine up and see if my car has that feature.

Ok, I found this in the owners manual:
Anti-Lockout Protection is a standard feature intended
to provide enhanced security and convenience. This
feature prevents a driver who has left the keys in the
ignition from locking the doors, using the power door
locks while any door is open.
To override this feature, when the key is in the ignition
and a door is open, hold the power door lock switch for
three seconds.
This feature cannot guarantee that you will never be
locked out of your vehicle. If you don’t leave the keys
in the ignition, or if you use the manual door lock,
or if you use the remote keyless entry transmitter
(if equipped), you could still lock your keys inside your
vehicle. Always remember to take your keys with you.
So if I read this right, if you car is auto locking with the keys in the ignition, then you have this feature disabled. I'm gonna try to turn this feature back on tonight. I'll let you know how it goes.

You can't turn this feature off.
(unless your ignition key slot is buggered, & it is not functioning all the time.)
When you hold the Lock button down for three seconds (with the key fully in the ignition key slot): it locks all the doors, after the 3-seconds.
For that one time.

But wait...there's more!! From the 2003 Grand Am Owner Manual:
Customizing the Automatic Door Locks
One of four operating modes may be selected and programmed by the driver on vehicles with an AUTOmatic transaxle:
- Mode 1: All doors automatically lock when the transaxle is shifted out of PARK. The doors will remain locked unless manually unlocked or the lock button is pressed. All doors will unlock when the transaxle is shifted into PARK and the key is turned to OFF
-Mode 2: This mode is only available on cars equipped with a remote keyless entry transmitter. All doors automatically lock when the transaxle is shifted out of PARK. Only the driver's door will unlock when the transaxle is shifted into PARK and the key is turned to OFF
Mode 3: All doors automatically lock when the transaxle is shifted out of PARK. No automatic door unlock.
Mode 4: No automatic lock or unlock.
For those with a MANUAL:
Mode 1: All doors automatically lock when the vehicle speed is greater than 5 mph (8 km/h) The doors will remain locked unless manually unlocked or the lock button is pressed. All doors unlock when the transaxle is shifted into REVERSE and the key is turned to OFF.
Mode 2: This mode is only available on cars with keyless entry. All doors automatically lock when the vehicle's speed is greater than 5 mph (8km/h) Only the driver's door will unlock when the transaxle is shifted into REVERSE and the key is turned to OFF.
Mode 3: All doors automatically lock when the vehicle speed is greater than 5 mph (8 km/h) No automatic door unlock.
Mode 4: No automatic lock or unlock.
"Before you vehicle was shipped from the factory it was programmed into Mode 1. To determine the current mode or to change to a different mode, do the following:
1. Put an automatic trans in PARK or a manual in REVERSE with the parking brake engaged and turn the ignition to ON.
2. Press and hold LOCK on the power door lock switch for 10 seconds. Release the switch when you hear the chime.
3. Count the number of chimes you hear. The number of chimes tells you which mode your vehicle is in. You can change the mode by pressing and holding LOCK on the power door lock switch (two chimes for Mode 2, three chimes for Mode 3, and four chimes for Mode 4)
4. Repeat Step 2 until you hear the number of chimes that matches the mode you want.
The mode you selected is now set.

Mike, I copied that right from the manual. If you can disable it, why would you not be able to enable it?
Wow Jon, I am impressed. Did you write the freakin manual.......LOL Thanks Bud!

It is just for that one time; when you hold down the lock button.
