Ok, looked around a bit didn't see this. The recall number is 06E064000 release date of 07/17/06. It has something to do with exterior lighting. Sorry, its for the 99-03 GA's . I found this info at cars.com, under research, quality ratings & recalls. Anyone heard of it or has more info on it?

thats BS... man why do the lights have to be orange on the side? How is that any safer than them being clear? The refector is still there and will stil reflect any light. If you ask me its a law made just so cops can harass Teenagers.
However I know that cops don't pull you over much for this sort of stuff because my side reflectors on my cavalier wagon were always broke!
i think it has to be orange so people know its a front of a car?

I dont get it.
A company can make products for cars that arent street legal, so why do they have to follow the law?

They listed it as street legal, that'd be my guess.

Yeah, seems pretty focked up to me.
I just went on ebay and searched and I saw a bunch of black headlights, and they all have an amber reflector now lol IMO it looks :amraam:

yeah, as I recall people were saying that on the back of them it said "D.O.T. Approved". If that is the case then the NHTSA has every right to recall them as it doesn't comply with the law.

And they are all $100 more than the clear reflector ones were...... so now theres no reason for me to up grade headlights. At first I was going to go with black, then decided all chrome with clear lenses so I dont mess up my HID beam pattern.... now that I cant get the clear reflector.... its pointless.... oh well, its money that I dont need to be spending anyway.

I haven't heard from anyone regarding replacing my cleared headlights. And I haven't gotten any harassment from the local PD...yet.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but then why don't they just remove the DOT Approved and sell them as offroad use only? Rather than reproducing them all with orange reflectors, or at least do half of each...

I highly doubt anyone will get harrassed over this issue, but yeah I checked customgrandam.com, which was selling the completly clear/chrome headlights (basically stock headlights with the clear reflector) and the pic is still up but the link for the info is gone. This sucks too, I thought about getting new headlights to replace my hazed up ones, but now its like I might as well just get a buffer and buff out the haze. This sucks I had an awesome plan involving those completly clear ones and some clear headlight covers + a headlight design styling kit. Sureley to god SOMEONE still sells them!
Its kinda GM's fault in a way if you ask me. what was so wrong with the last gen grand am's headlight design? The whole headlight capsule was completly clear, and the orange marker was a little rectangle on the side... in fact this design pretty much carried over to the malibu, but when they did the grand am they had to give it its gawd awful Orange eyelids! They are huge too, a LOT bigger than they need to be!

oh brother...here we go again with those damn headlights  i bet ALOT of state officials are cracking down on these and that is why they are being recalled. when i had mine, ther was never a problem nor accident....i do say it's B.S. but there is an ENTIRE thread about that. also it COMPLETELY depends on how strictly enforced your PD and Staties are in your state.

well they probably thought the orange reflector to be more safe for the vehicle dirving. but i agree with you. i still want mine back

Exactly! There is a thread that explains why the D.O.T. approval is on the lights. Plus Tradesonic never mentioned that the lights were street legal to begin with.

I still dont understand why they cant make them with clear reflectors.
Company's make aftermarket parts all the time that arent street legal.
Plus ive been lookin at MI laws on it. I still cant find anything that says it has to be an amber reflector up front.
This is all our laws say on it.
(1) Reflectors shall be mounted at a height not less than 15 inches and not higher than 60 inches above the ground on which the vehicle stands, except that if the highest part of the permanent structure of the vehicle is less than 15 inches, the reflector at such point shall be mounted as high as that part of the permanent structure will permit.
And:
The turn signal need to be red or amber on the rear and white or amber on the front.

yep, i was the one that figured out the "DOT" approval on the new lamps. they were made from an exact mold of the oem housings.
ill keep looking and see what other laws on reflectors i can pull up.

If you look closely, the lettering on the housing of the AD headlights is different than that of stock, at least my stock ones are different than the AD headlights, maybe mine are different since they are 05?
