View Full Version : Turning down the boost (Vortec)
Hey guys,
Just wondering if it's possible to turn down the boost?
I have the basic rsm ;crap setup, and currently have no need to run the kit at 8psi.
Other then ripping the whole thing out, anything I can do?

bigger pulley?

Yeah, bigger pulley will turn the blower slower and lower the boost. Never worked with a vortec SC though so I have no idea how to change pulleys on them, where to get them at, or how much they cost.

wouldnt a boost controler work?

It would if you were using a turbo. ;) Boost controllers operate the wastegate on a turbo that allows exhaust gas to bypass the turbine and keep the compressor spinning at a speed needed to maintain a given boost level. Superchargers=not exhaust driven so no wastegate and no boost controller. Since they are driven off the engine peak boost is determined directly by engine rpm and the relative sizes of the crank and SC pulleys (which determines the mulitplication of blower rpm versus engine rpm).

oh thank you for explaining that

u could also swap your crank pulley.

Can't you just adjust the BOV so it releases off at whatever PSI desired?
But why would you want to do that anyway?

No, BOV's don't work like that. Anyway, he said he wants to turn down the boost for whatever reason. Maybe mechanical issues? He didn't say.

Good call on the underdrive pulley, I didn't even think of that. It's a weird problem, because most people want to up the boost, not turn it down. An UD pully would definitely do it, though.

I was thinking wastegate, my bad.
Sorry for not throwing out the full reasoning.
It's mostly just due to it getting closer and closer to winter type driving.
The car (I'm hoping) will be put away in early november for the winter.
I was just looking to turn in down for a month or so, then come spring tune out all the minor bugs in the system and up the boost heh.

Does the 3.4's blower run off the accessory belt or is it camshaft driven like the 2.4?

Um, no blowers are camshaft driven. The GM supercharger kit for the 2.4 is also belt driven.
Psi, just drive it with a light foot. No need to go to all that work just to turn down the boost a few psi for winter if thats all you want. If you don't floor it and take it to redline you won't get very high boost anyway. Thats what I'm doing. I'm also waiting a couple more weeks until the beginning of november then putting it in storage for the winter. :)

RSM's 2.4 SC kit is camshaft driven. Well kinda, theres an extra belt hooked up the the power steering side of the cam.
And seeing as he's running RSM's 3.4 kit I wasn't sure if it was the same.
