Okay, so, here's the situation...

Redoing my entire system. Going to go with two 500w 10's in the trunk (have em) and going to fab a way up to drop in 5.25" full ranges (gotta get em) up front. So I hit up eBay tonight to track down a pair of 6x9's for the back dash, but then I got to thinking. Why keep 6x9s? They're mainly used to produce bass in a sub woofer-less system, why not take a pair of 6.5's, and slap them in the back dash instead?! So that way, I've got full-range sound in the front as well as in the back, and the subs are pushing in the trunk.

What do y'all think?! Good idea? Bad idea?

Thanks,
-Ryan.

doesnt make any difference, its been done numerous times.most of the time the 6.5s come with adapter holes to fit in 6x9 holes anyways.

6.5's will sound better back there, but at the same time, how often are you back there? i was thinking about doing this, but then i thought why? its not worth all the work. my 6x9s sound just fine, and i dont have anything lower then 60hrz going to them. that way i know they wont destort at high volumes, and the subs fill in the sound just fine.

I would roll 6 1/2 components front and back your not going to gain anything by just putting coxial 6 1/2's speakers back there.

Yeah, my aim was to go with comp's in the back as well as in the front.

I don't sit back there often, but I do own a four door, and usually have passengers back there the majority of the time.

I wasn't going to post the make of speaker I was going to go with, I didn't want to make it about the brand. However, I am going with Alpine's Type R Series speakers all around.

you know you could just take out your rear speakers, and put the alpines, i should slap you, in your rear doors. then you could do a vinyl like mine, all the way around. just a thought

it could be about the same amount of money as putting 6.5s in the rear. i said could be. why not look into it? who knows, maybe you can get a really good deal on some vinyl.

Well, what with the current state of my car's exterior appearence (see my C/D) I don't think I want to get in too deep with modifications, I think I'm going to draw the line at dropping in speakers through the front door. I guess the 6.5"vs.6x9" thing is still up in the air... Though, I think i'm siding with the 6x9's, seeing as it would be less work.

PS. has anyone ever, or ever seen the rear stock speaker grills removed, so that the aftermarket speaker can mount flush with the rear dash? I was looking over the panel, and the speaker grill continues down and houses the car seat anchors, so this doesn't look like it could be done without a replacement panel. Just curious.
