I was told by a friend that he has seen something like a tiny pouch that goes over your filter for the winter so no crap like salt or sand will get in it. it will be good for us New Englanders. Well i searched for a bit i found they do make them, depending on the size of filter. Not sure if this is a repost but here comes the link to buy them.
this is the one i found for mine. http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=RX-4990DL
just go to Google, type in K&N air filter wrap and soem sites should come up. it is a little more cheaper to get teh product number ad go to your local auto store and order it. it'll come in quicker.
Mods: sorry if this is a repost but didn't find anything.

Just take apart the cold air intake for the winter and make it a short ram with the extension piece that goes down. No money spent except those stupid plastic clip things for the fender wall.($2.00 at auto zone)

I drove my GA through 3 winters with a CAI and a K&N and never had a problem at all. Suprisingly the filter didnt get that dirty.

They allegedly prevent water from getting in, and IIRC they are waterproof to a degree.

yeah I haven't had any trouble. I'm using a Dr. Speed stage 3 CAI. It seems to me that there is less dust in the air in winter.
One thing, though...I'm sure you've all noticed the holes in the left front wheel well. When the wheel turns, it literally throws grime through the gap right to where the filter is. I actually plug those gaps up and it made a big difference to how often I need to change the filter.
typically I change the filter every 4 months anyway...I have two. No down time...just swap them and take my time perfectly cleaning the one that's not in.
