Hello all, been keeping an eye on these forums for a while now but here's my first thread. :)

I bought my grand am a couple months ago and i already fell in love with this car. It is a 99 SE coupe with a 3400 v6 engine and it runs pretty smoothly. After bringing this to a friends house one day, I was quite suprised to see yet another grand am... Apparently he recently bought one too! His is an 01 GT and naturally because we have always been competitive between eachother (friendly competition) he started goin off on how his GT will leave my SE in the dust (kinda ****y for not racing it before).

We haven't gone at it yet, but I'm just curious at what is truly different between the GT and SE versions? I know the GT has ram air... but that's it. I also wonder how much of a hp difference there is between both cars (both are all stock... currently :P ).

Not all 99-05 SEs came with the 3400, some came with 2.2 or 2.4. The GT only has about 5 hp difference and has a top speed about 10KM/H over the SE with the 3400.

Even that 5hp is debatable.
The trans gearing is also different but nothing to write home about.
You 2 would run *about* the same 1/4 mile as long as the cars are both maintaned the same.

FYI there are tons of threads on this info. I give it an hour maybe 2 tops before a mod locks this thread saying to use the search function.

to be fair you cant search with "SE" or "GT" so i don't think a search would yield any results for this query. anyway, its another excuse to talk about how much better the SE is than the GT. :D

well quick, find some of those threads and help a newb out, hell you and I are still newbs compared to some people like pyro and coupe.

Ram Air is just worthless plastic w/ a good advertising scheme (for its time). One of the major things is the body panels and bumpers and the dual exhaust.

*iagree*

when I put the cold air in my car, I realized how useless the ram air really is

Performance wise, the tranny ratio is slightly quicker on a GT, SE's exhaust/muffler is smaller than GT's, and the "Ram Air" is on the GT (which isn't really worth anything noticable)

Technically, straight from the factory, the GT will beat the 3400 SE in 0-60 and quarter times, but not by much.

The biggest differences are that the GT looks cooler. :) Better looking body panels, better wheels, dual exaust pipes. And for the later models, the SC/T kit with the ram air hood.

All in all......... GT = better. (and I'm not just saying that cuz I have a GT) ;)

Oh yeah......... 2-door over 4-door too.

I dont know there are some pretty damn good SE's out there. Look at pyro's, his SE makes my GT look like crap

Other differences for the V6 SE vs. V6 GT IIRC:

Rear disk brakes
Heavier sway bars
Monsoon/Premium sound
Rear view mirror reading lights

Cool (thanks for moving this thread to the correct forum btw)!

I have about $800 that I can put into this car so far (put a little from each paycheck aside for my little project for the car), so I'll probably get a new exhaust first. gotta see if any of my friends with mechanical knowledge can help with the install... otherwise may be going to a shop to put em on.

Although my GA doesn't sport the GT tag on it, I see the car has some potential.

Oh and ya, sorry if this was posted before. I DID do a search (but like said, I used both SE and GT and it produced to results) but thx for answering again. :)

Rear view mirror reading lights

Did SE2 get these? Could have sworn I had some..

Save your money for LIM repair, unless you can do it your self.

Dual Exhaust, wasnt it dual tips? Comes out of same unit i think...

Whats the deciding factor on how newb-ish one is? Am I still a newb? lol

^ I think we should be considered veteran newbs.

'04 SE1 here, I ran against a buddy who had an '04 GT with the same engine. We were dead even until my speed limiter kicked in at 105 MPH, and he walked away from me. He said he got up to about 115 MPH before his kicked in.

I thought that the GT limiter was 126?
