Hey all, I have a 1998 GA GT (3.1, automatic) and I have noticed lately when the car goes to shift gears, it seems to be shifting harder than it used to. Honestly, I don't mind at all but it never used to do this before! I am wondering what might cause this? It's not shifting ALOT harder, but enough that it will kinda "jerk" the car a little bit. Any ideas what it MIGHT be? I havent changed the tranny fluid in about 20k, but I checked it and it is about 1/2 quart low. Please HELP!!

add the fluid and see if it helps

HAhaha, I know it. The grand ams have a special tranny that is made to switch into a racing mode. Whenever the car is driven a certain way, it will "switch" into this mode, allowing quicker, crisper shifts. This is what I have been told by many pontiac mechanics...if they're bsing me, lemme know please. Whenever I drive my car hard for a bit, it does this, and you can hear it pop into place. Drive it and baby it for about an hour and it should go away...

I doubt very much that Grand Am's have a "racing mode" in their tranny. I talked to a GM mechanic that said to get the tranny flushed and go from there....anyone else have any ideas?

Racing mode wtfwtf lol

Try the tranny flush sounds like the valve body is sticking a bit.

That doesn't make sense my friends. Why would it "stick" if I run it hard for a period of 15 minutes, then stick for another 45 while I run it softly, then it doesn't "stick". Doesn't make any logical sense. I can actually FEEL the tranny shift a hell of a lot quicker after I run it hard for 15 minutes, then when I run it softly, then try racing. Not trying to be rude or what not, but the tranny fluid is fine. This 2000 GT has done it all of its life. :boogie:  :stupid: So, I'm pretty sure the tranny does have SOME kind of a mode where it shifts quicker....let me know of your thoughts :P

If you don't believe me...try it.

i agree... but i think itz just tha computer getting used 2 how u drive. i disconnected my battery 2 reset tha computer, and mashed on it afterwardz, and after a while (week or so) it shifted noticably harder and continued to.

*shrug*One way, or the other, it isn't the transmission fluid, or it stickin =-) Just wanted to make a point :p

You all may be looking to much into this. It's the cold weather making the fluid thicker.

you make an excellent point...it just started doing it when it got really cold out...it was kinda warm today and it seemed much better...

Look you twits. I've seen many complaints of hard or harsh shifting on the Gm's. And alot of the time it's cleared through a flush or replacement of the v.body. The comp will see a WOT series and make up for it inducing harder shifts. I wouldn't call it a RACING mode though:rolleyes: Cold weather obviously does effect fluid but only to a degree.

And when you disconnect the batt for a certain amount of time or when the pcm is reprogrammed it "usually" goes into a safe mode until it sees certain perameters. The shifts seem to be firmer and starts to shift at about 5500 instead of 6200 or whatever the F. The comp does compensate for the way you drive though. Watch who you newbies are calling stupid!!!

First of all, I never called anyone stupid. I was just pretty damn ****ed that you laughed at my comment. It isn't the transmission sticking, it isn't the fluid getting "thicker" because I think it would then get "thinner" in the summer, and it did the exact same thing too. 1998GAGT....quit laughing, because I wasn't wrong. If you guys wouldn't of responded with such a sarcastic attitude in the first place I wouldn't of been angry.
