I was having an issue with my car when first heating up from cold. It would begin normally and around 160 it would shoot up to around 240 and swing back and forth temperature wise for about 15 minutes before it finally settled and my heat would start to work. I thought it was the thermostat so i attempted replacing it myself. I realized i didnt have the tools to remove the exhaust manifold and had a "professional" do it for me. When i got it back it worked fine. Would heat up normally and stil right around 200, the heat worked great. That was Thursday. Today i get up to drive to work it heats up normally i have heat. About half way through my drive the temp starts creeping up and i have no heat im blowing cold air. By the time i got to work my temp was at about 230 degrees.

So my question is:

Did this yahoo forget to attach something firmly??
Is my water pump goin out?

I felt the hose coming from the resorvoir and it was cold as could be
but the main hose was hot.

Suggestions??

thanks

Check to see if your low on coolant.

That's not what I asked. I'm sure you have coolant in it or the engine would of overheated by now. You need to make sure your not low on coolant. Before you start the car cold check the reservoir and make sure it's at the cold fill line.

/thread necro

I'm having the same exact issue.

It seems like when the engine temp spikes, the air gets cold.

Then the engine temp will settle back to where it's supposed to be [185-190ish], and I get heat again...
Then later, the engine temp will start to rise once again, and cold air blows.

Then repeat...

Coolant level is fine, We replaced the thermostat with a 180 degree one thinking it was that.
It's much better than it was before, Because before none of the hoses would pressurize. So I think the tstat was bad before.

I'm thinking an air bubble/pocket?
Anytime I open the bleeder valve coolant comes out, and it doesn't seem like any air does.
Should I just pay to have it flushed, as it's nearly on 100k miles atm?

I bought it at 89k, so I don't know if it was done before.
But the coolant that drained from the radiator when we changed the tstat looked pretty gunky.

Read: Lower Intake Manifold Gaskets leaking.

On both cases.

How so? My oil is perfect.
Coolant has no oil in it.

There's no oil leaking at all, I've ran 11k miles on it and never had to put coolant in it once.
There's no coolant pouring out of the engine anywhere.
No puddles.
No drips.

There's not one sign thats consistent of a LIM leak.

ive been having a similar problem. but the temp went up to about 230 only when i let it sit and idle. and then i would trive around a little and it would drop back down to about 200. but i still had heat the entire time. and my coolent is fine.
currently im running peak coolent.
and i just got a 180 thrmostate and im going to run dex-cool coolent.
Any suggestions?

Your current thermostat is bad / you have a lim leak.

I dont understand if you mean you already put the now thermostat in....but if you did, you may have air in the coolant lines.

Or it could be that your fans aren't kicking on.

Okay, to update this one.

New LIM, didn't fix it. Still overheated.
Took some of it off, retorqued stuff, figuring we made a mistake.

Still, same overheating problem.

Took the heads off.
They were totally crap.
You can look at the pics I have in my other thread.
2 were leaking, one more was on the way.
Got them resurfaced and taken care off.
new gasket set, car runs PERFECT.
better than the day I bought it used from the dealer.
No engine noises, knocks, piston slap is gone, she runs peerrrrfecto.
Resurfacing was 150.
Headgasket kit was 135.
Total came to 332 or something...
Also bought new head bolts to go with it.

The overheating is TOTALLY gone.
It runs at 185 on the dot. [or line]
I'm /happy dancing all day/night long.

Oh, and the heat warms up around 120-130
