I know this a dumb question but I was wondering if any you guys and girls have any ideas on how to squeeze out more horsepower out of a 3100 SFI V6 engine in a 1998 Pontiac Grand Am GT. I all ready know about the CAI (still trying to find a company the makes one for my car), I am hopefully going to instill a larger Throttle Body (from a 56mm to a 62mm {still trying a company for that as well}) and swap the stock ehaust system with a new SLP or Flowmaster Exhaust system. And I replaceing the old plug and wires with New spark plugs and 8.5mm spark wires. Any ideas would be greatly apperated. I am working with a budgut of about 2,000$

Since you don't have the companies making exact fit mods you will need to go custom. Make your own CAI w/parts from Home Depot. Port you TB yourself. Port the MAF (carefully!) for more flow. Have a shop to the port work to your manifold. But basically you need head work for decent power gains.

Look around the board! The 3100 is practically the same as the 3400, I am sure you will find 3100 support! PM Vegeta if you need some guidance for that powerplant.

FYI the 3400 cai's fit the 3100 exact. :newbie:

Never ever port the MAF. It will not increase flow and will only screw up the MAF reading. This will cause the engine to run rough.

welcome. I agree with spruce.

Bad advice 100%

My MAF is ported and my car runs great....Superb some may say.

until you get one little piece of debris in there and it busts off a sensor and your car wont get about 30mph, if it even starts. There are no gains from it what so ever, so why even take the risk?

if you are looking for 3100 stuff, look on the sponsors sites, like the 60* store and milzy and andy's those are the main places to find stuff

edit: oops forgot MP racing

AFIK they do but they require a little modding to allow the pipe to fit through to into the fender..

here is a pic that shows what you have to cut out to allow the intake to fit... http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/5566/dscf0281121692cvz3.th.jpg (http://img105.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf0281121692cvz3.jpg)

BTW- Right now we (MP Racing) are having a sale on our cold air intakes.. http://mpracing.org/store/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=19

Meh...there's a few threads about this on GAOC. It's an inexpensive mod, and a few of us who've doen the mod have felt it helped the performance if even slightly.

The risks for me are Moot since I have a spare.

if you are worrying about maf size and performance gains just from that, get the ls1 recalibrated maf from GMS and be done with it

I take it you have before and after dyno charts to prove a gain exists? If not then time to get the butt dyno recalibrated. If tejohnson could run 13's with his turbo system and not outflow the MAF. Then there is no way an N/A 3400 using the same MAF could see a gain from porting it.

I've seen scans from a 3400 using a ported MAF sensor and the owner was wondering why the car was running rough no matter what he did to try and fix the tune. The MAF signal was all over the place with wide variations even though rpm remained constant. This was all due to the airflow passing over the MAF sensor elements being turbulent, from porting the MAF housing.

Porting the MAF does NOTHING! Just get a 3.5 LS1/LT1 MAF like I did if you want to unrestrict the flow. A factoy LS1/LT1 MAF will do.

Thanks for the advice i will look around. The 62mm throttle body would fit on my car.

My car runs fine with the Ported MAF and can even be said runs very well considering the times I post.

Whether or not the MAF adds or takes away...yes. A Dyno would be needed and I am going hopefully in the spring. Since the Mod costed me ZERo dollars and was Ported by someone else, and is definitly NOT hurting the car...why not?

...and regarding my butt dyno...the few of us that did this mod all had the same positive experience with it.

The case of the rough running 3400 with the Ported MAF is most likely due to someone touching the little wires inside.

When I go to the Dyno I'll swap MAF's.

This has all been discussed in gruesome detail on GAOC. Go search it and read it.

yes the 65 or 62mm tb from the 60* store will fit on ur car, but you will want to port at least ur upper to get any gains from it at all

is it easy to p&p the tb and the UIM or should i go to a locate shop? How about exhaust system, People tell me that the flowmaster 80 series would work.

all of these topics are covered numerous times. You cannot port your own parts unless you have the machinery for it. Check out www.60degreev6.com for P&P parts, and the flowmaster 80 is a favorite among the N-body crowd.

do some searching. :D
