View Full Version : Changing oil on a 2.2 Ecotec

Hey, does anyone know where I can find a walkthrough on chaging the oil on an '02 Alero w/a 2.2 Ecotec? I've never changed a cartridge filter before, and I don't want to mess anything up. Thanks.

I would think www.j-body.org should have it somewhere.

Pretty simple really. Just change the o ring and you'll be fine.

There's lots of info on www.ecotecforum.com
They cover the 2.0, 2.2 & 2.4 Ecotec engines in all makes and models of cars.

Thanks. I was looking on Advanced Auto's website about the filter, and the pic had a nub on the top that looked like a hose went onto. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't anything special besides replacing the cartridge.
it is part of the cartridge...took me a good 15 minutes to figure out what i was supposed to do the first time i changed my sisters 2.2 eco oil. lol

So other than being part of the cartridge, does it attach to anything?

I drop a 1.25" socket onto the filter well cap and attach a long extension. I slight twist loosens the cap enought to get it off by hand. Loosen it up and set it on the rim to drain the oil back into the well.
I think the nub attaches the filter to the cap. Stick the new filter on the cap and turn the cap back in by hand. Use the wrench to snug it up.

Does it use 4.5 quarts just like the 3.4?

My Owners Manual says 5.5 quarts but that is too much.
I put 5 quarts in.
