View Full Version : How To: HID Kit install

This is how I installed my HID kit, purchased from www.misterjung.com . This is the 7000k color temp kit.
First of all... My car is a 2001, with the DRL kit installed as well. I *will not* take any responsibility for any problems you have with your car, this is just an informative thread to show you how I've done it. I can't say how these are going to operate on cars that sitll have DRLs, but from what I have read, apparently the ballasts don't like to be under-powered.
Some issues..
Our cars use negative triggered headlights. This means at the harness, there is always positive power, and when the headlamps are switched on, the ground is provided to complete the circuit. I *HIGHLY* suggest you get the plastic ballast covers I used, one so the ballasts don't ground out and the lights flash on, but also, the ballasts are exposed to the weather and need to be protected. The covers can be purchased here. (http://suvlights.tripod.com/suvlightscom/html/hid-retrofit-philipsbulbs.htm)
High beam indicator is always on.. working on that, but for now I don't have time and it doesn't bother me.
The "diode kit" included with the HID kit does not function for me. Since we are negative trigger, I hooked it up to the negative supply instead of the positive, but it just doesn't work. I could care less, I just don't touch the high beam switch ever anymore anyways.
So here we go... first of all, TAKE OUT YOUR HEADLAMP FUSES!! They are fuse #'s 50 and 51 if I remember correctly.. pictured

Take out your headlamp housings and headlight bulbs.. Follow the how-to for those instructions. Put the HID bulbs in, with the red "bar" down (you will see what I mean when you have the bulbs, I don't have a pic of this).
I mounted my ballasts on the little bars directly behind the headlights. 2 14" zip ties on each will do. You can mount them elsewhere, but you will probably have to take off the bumper to do that.
Here is the driver's side ballast in place

Bulb in place in the housing, and some of the connections.
The positive connection to the ballast goes to pin B of the headlight harness (CENTER pin). The negative goes to pin A, which is the pin on the RIGHT when you are looking at the connector with the flat side up.
Don't worry about the diode kit as the instructions suggest because it's not going to work. You can accomplish keeping your headlamps on with lows and highs if you want with relays.

The 9007 connector..
Everything else is self explanatory in the kit instructions.

Well, I had my housings out for the first time in a while this past weekend, and my plastic cases are covered in crap. I'm glad it's these and not the ballasts :)

Seth, any idea of other sellers who have the non-conductive ballast mounts? The link says they are out of stock, and gives no info to re-stock times. I may be coming into another HID kit... :D

Nope.. I'd try maybe contacting them and asking lead times.. Or search around google or yahoo for the philips kits. Someone else has to have em (I hope)

Here's the boxes after a couple of months (and a harsh winter so far). I found a better spot inside the engine bay for them, I'm going to move them there in the near future. You still need the boxes though to keep the ballast themselves from grounding out...

Passenger side.
Comin soon--- how to kill the high beam indicator when using DRL kit, also plug-in installation into the stock 9007 harness instead of jamming wires in it.

Forgot to post an update...
Getting the high beam indicator to go off is cake... except I don't have the correct resistors around to do it and keep the SVS off too. Gotta play, hopefully I'll have the time soon.
Anyways,
Here's a new addition - instead of jamming plugs into the stock harness, I picked up a male 9007 plug and crimped it on to the connector going to the ballast - much cleaner and makes the wiring less messy.
Pull the 2 power leads from where the bulb is back out of the tubing... crimp.. protect with some wire loom. Voila

9007 male connectors are most easily available at www.suvlights.com .. make sure you get the correct crimper if you don't have it.. the "d-sub" style (I THINK) from radio shack works perfect... the kind made for molex plugs, etc..

BTW, The "G-Garage " Kit comes with connectors like that. Very nice, and good weather protection as well.

Hate to bring up an old topic but where can I find the Ballast boxes? I asked this before. Don't remember what the response was but i've done a search on the internet and checked suvlights.com but come up with nothing. What are the correct names for the boxes? Who manufacturers the boxes? This will info will help me in my searches. Thanx.

They're for philips / hella ballasts. If suvlights doesn't have them, email them directly, or email alan@misterjung.com . After that, try contacting anyone that sells philips/hella kits, or philips/hella directly.

Wow, didn't think the company would show up here. Thanks for the info. That's good news. I have had no luck in finding these cases.

Since I can't order a Catz HID kit, which other kits are good?
I see a lot on eBay with Osram Sylvania ballasts and bulbs...is that what I should get? Or is there another brand?
Thanks.

There are a few other threads about HID kits, what's best, etc.. Where some good information was added from members that aren't around too much anymore. I suggest you search around and reply in those threads.. this thread isn't for HID kit discussion just install help.

sorry to bring up an old topic. Although this can also help some others. Anyway i have the CATZ HID system and im having trouble installing it. The back part of the bulb is realy long and it hits agains the bar that holds the headlight in place. How can i go about installing this. I thought about cuttin down the bar but i would have to cut all the way to the hole in where the bar that holds the headlight in place, so i can't do that.. But then my headlight wont be secure..anyone have this system and has some advise for a 99 gt. Or anyway other way.
Thanks
