I was just about to buy a RSM supercharger, SC/T hood, sc/t spoiler, dual post mirrors and get a new paint job for the GAGT when i really started thinkin about the future. The GA would be sick with a supercharger but after that it doesn't have much more potential. I want something that has more potential over time.
I really want a 2002 5.7L LS1 WS6 Trans Am. I doubt i'll be able to get it cause insurance is goin to eat me alive so i might have to downgrade.
My second choice is a 2005 4.6L Mustang GT. I see too many mustangs on the road and want to be different but i can't afford many other V8's with this power.
My 3rd choice is a 2004 4.6L Mustang GT.
After that, I don't know if i'd get anything else or keep with my plan on the GAGT. Another car i considered was a 3000GT cause they are older and only V6's but with twin turbo still push some power. I am a muscle car, domestic guy so i don't want a small light 4-banger with high pitch exhaust. I want a big, loud, powerful car.
Anyone have any ideas on any other cars i should look at? It will all depend on insurance what i get.

05 or 06 GTO...insurance is not that bad because most teenagers dont go around buying GTO's. Now a mustang or trans am will be higher. I believe my insurance company qouted me 150 a month for an 05 GTO, and im 22.

Grand Prix GTP hands down. Spend $600 or so and you've got very quick car.

insted of supercharging, turbo the GA. IMO you'd have a lot of potential.

Are you in college/going to college soon?
Do you rent, own, live with parents?
If you are in or going to college, or live at home, you shouldn't even think about a new car.

not worth the money in any way shape or form. Best idea, IMO, would be a 3500 top end swap, cams, then turbo.

GTO = mid 13's = $25k+

I like the GTP. Oh, and you could drive it in the winter.

will a 6.0 LS2 GTO really be cheaper on insurance than a 5.7 LS1 Trans Am?
and I am goin to college in the fall. I have been offered $57,000 to one of the schools i'm lookin at and i plan to work in a shop. my goal is to build engines for cars so i will always be doin stuff with them so i should be ok in college. I will know, work in shops where i can do stuff and maintain upkeep.
Snowboardr18

o yeah, the GTO is cheaper but no way i can afford the car itself so forget that. I can barely afford the 04+ Mustang GT's cause of how new they are. The TA's are older so the cars themselves are cheaper.

Then just keep your car and buy some old fox body to make fast or something. You don't want to work on your DD.

no way i can afford 2 cars and in college it shouldn't be driven near as much i drive now. i need something that i can work on for practice so i can move up in 6 years to a GT500 or somethin. i also want to be have something that i can take out to T&T nights at the dragstrip without embarassing myself.

Actually you can pick up 05 GTO's for around 22k. So for 7 grand more you have yourself a nice V8 LS2 rear wheel drive car, or for 15k you can have a V6 3800 front wheel drive car. IMO you can do tons more with an LS2 engine vs a 3800 V6.
Take your pick.

or a LS1 TA for 13-15k used if insurance isn't too outrageous
OR you can show people that you just didnt take an easily moddable (bigger after market) engine and make it fast and take the 3400 and make it fast. it seems the latter would be more impressive. my .02

that is true and i wish i could but it takes much more money than i have to get the 3400 competing with the cars i listed
considering the resale value of the GA you might not get that much for it depending on the mileage. so if your looking at a 15k car you might get like 5000 for the GA. in theory you could have 10k to play with for the GA. (depending on many factors of course) unless your looking at going like deep in the 10's or something i think thats a decent amount to mess with. and depending on what exactly your looking to do, you might be able to custom fab your own parts which would be cheaper.

BTW- quick check on my local AutoTrader (Minneapolis), the cheapest 05 GTO was $24K and had 16k miles on it. Theres a 03 GTP with 28k miles on it for $14k. So maybe your market is different, but around here.... yeah.

Seriously.... if you're hell bent on p!ssing away money while your in college on a car, then I would just spend the money on the GA. Build it up, do a 5-speed swap and turbo that ish....
They are all saying that since you are going to be going to school then dont get a car. Yah it is tough, but im doing the same thing. I dont have a scholarship for school, I have a 350 monthly payment for the GA and still pay rent and only work part time. Its tough and you get tired but its worth it if u really want a new car.

Yeah, it's all fun and games until you get done with college, have car thats 4 years old, owe $15k on and it's only worth $10k. And on top of that, you have college tuition to pay back.
Theres no way I would miss out on part of my college experience (from working a lot) just so I could have the next fast or cool car.
Trust me, I'm in college, I know. The smartest thing I ever did was make sure I had my car totally paid for BEFORE I started college. It's one less bill to pile up, and it's nice to know that I make a dent in my college tuition bill every month instead of paying for a car that I use to go pick up booze and go to the mall.

If you are worried about insurance then a V8 is out of the picture regardless. However best bet it to get quotes and see what you can afford. Use calculators like they are going out of style and figure out a budget for how much you want. Also DO NOT trade in the GA!!! You will get crap for it and will hate yourself for doing so. Sell it on autotrader or some other private auction. You will get a much better price.
Now for the car. A WS6 is far more rare then any Mustang. Plus it looks a hell of a lot better IMO.

Many people don't have that option. When it snows here, I still have to get to work and school, so I can't just leave my car in the garage.

It sounds like you are actually trying to talk yourself out of it. You should just wait until you could afford something really good rather than just spend money on something that you arent too satisfied with. Especially when you're in college, worry about school first, hey look at it this way, you own a car, some people cant even get that. Consider yourself lucky.

i'm not trying to talk myself out of it. My 2 favorite cars are a GT500 and a Trans Am. I will not be able to afford a GT500 for atleast 6-10 years so a Trans Am is what I want so bad. I'm was just doubting that I can afford insurance. Right now it is expected to double, possibly triple. If there is a way that I can afford it, I will have it within weeks. If not I just need backups.
And I can't afford a mustang cobra. I need a car for under $15,000. Its tough enough to find an 04+ Mustang GT for under 15

Well having owned a GTO they are extremely fun and an absolute thrill ride everyday.
Daily driving practicality, eh, they're not that bad, just a bit of a liability when the snow falls. Personally, I'm losing interest in compromising, trying to make one car be my everything. My daily driver, my show car, my mod project. I've realized it's too difficult and too risky. I would have enjoyed the GTO a lot more had it been my 2nd car and I didn't have to deal with all my mechanical issues on a daily basis. But since I depended on it so heavily because it was my only transportation, it was more stressful and too much of an obligation.
I'm enjoying the SS however i'm hoping to have something like the SS or another SUV by the end of my lease as a daily driver (hell, may even buy the SS), then consider buying a used GTO, as well as a 350z (two project cars i've always wanted to have) way down the road.
With that being said, I'd suggest getting a used 05/06 Jeep Grand Cherokee. When I was shopping for cars in December, I found an 06 with 15,000 miles and they wanted $16k. It was a Laredo base model with the v6. I test drove the v6 and it was very throaty and the truck was just a blast to drive! Plus, on the more responsible side, it's a reliable, durable and safe vehicle to drive everyday, and won't cost you any money to drive in the different seasons, just fill up gas and go! Save your sports car for after college, please trust us.
Oh yeah:
Brand new 06 Jeep Grand Cherokee (in December): $28k starting price
Slightly used 06 Jeep Grand Cherokee (same time): $16k with negotiable room. HUGE savings.

well, i was suprised when i talked to the insurance guy. The 5.7 TA is only $100 more every 6 months than my 3.4 GA. I don't know how... Anyway, since it's practically the same, I am definately getting it. Like I said before, it isn't goin to be driven that much accept for on weekends when i feel like goin out. I will be on college where i don't need to travel much. When I do, there are free buses all around campus and if we dicide to go 10 miles to the city, its not far for me to drive or i'll hitch a ride from someone else. The car is not going to be show quality either. I think i'll be fine with it. I will buy it for the same price I sell my GA and insurance barely changes. It really can't hurt other than gas. The GA will be posted for sale soon.

I'm sorry Ryan, but I don't see much reason in having a beautiful car like a Trans Am sit outside in your college parking lot, in the elements, not being driven, just because you want one.
I strongly suggest either keeping the GA or buying something more practical. Otherwise, you're only going to stress yourself out more by having that sweet car sitting outside in your parking lot, either getting scratched, damaged or hit by other ignorant or otherwise drunk college kids. And don't tell me you're going to take a bus when you have a effing trans am, c'mon man. Be real, you're gonna drive that thing every second, or atleast want to.
Keep the GA. Or if you're that interested in getting rid of it, get something more practical like what I suggested before.
And no one sells their car on here, it just won't work.

Well I wouldn't be so much concerned with that, because it's something we all have the right to do. However, it was more of an indirect question of "What we would do" rather than asking for advice. Because like you said, if it was advice, he would have listened.

Yes, I know.... but I just think it is funny how people always ask for others opinions, but then continue on to do whatever they want to anyways. It's not just this instance, it happens all the time on here.

I'm not ignoring anything. I was saying that cars I wanted in what order and was seein if anyone else though one would be better over the other. My major is Mechanical Engineering and Motorsports. I plan or getting an internship/job right away at some kind of shop and moving up to a race team very quickly being in NC the home of racing. I will be going to the track for T&T nights just for fun with friends. Yes is can be fast and raced competition but i'm not so i'm not putting a ton of money into it. Also, I can get one now and take care of it myself until I get out of college instead of waiting and buying one then all with 150,000+ miles on them.
Also, UNCC has many parking garages which I plan on using and the car will be covered. If it sits outside it will also be covered but I hope it won't be out much.
I understand what you guys are saying and i'm not ignoring your advice but I don't think everyone understands that cars will be my life. I want to start tinkering with something just to learn. I want to get involved and meet other people with these types of cars. I will also have a place and all the tools to work and maintain the car. I think that it is not a bad decision buying this car. Also, it is not going to cost me much difference than the GA. Why would I choose the GA over the TA if the cost is practically the same(other than gas)? It's not like I'm spending my life savings to get this.
And one more thing. Since i am crazy about cars, I am spending to do stuff to my GA to make it fast. If I don't get a TA, I am getting a supercharger for the GA. I would be actually spending more money on the GA than TA. In the long run it will be a waste cause the GA doesn't have near as much potential after college. After college I would sell the GA anyway. If i get a TA now, I will keep it after college and really start to put serious money into it. I feel that it is better in the long run. My parents felt the same way as you guys but they finally understand me and they realize that it will be better over time.
So please don't feel like i'm ignoring you. I guess i wasn't clear for the point of the thread so sorry. Just try to understand what I feel too. Thanks

You won't want a Trans Am in a few years, you'll want something better that's newer and more available to you and your new job.
I understand that cars are life, it is for me too. However, I definitely wish I'd made better decisions than I had.
And the GT500 is uber gay..my mom's bf has one, it's a glorified mustang + $20k.
It's all good though man, we're just tryin to help. Ultimately, you're going to do whatever you want.
