Hey guys,
I dynoed my car today with a 75 shot. I have a 2004 Grand Am SE2 with CAI, deleted resonator and 2.5" dual exhaust...
I am also spraying with a ZEX 75 Shot Dry Kit.
I have some serious questions because the dyno results were a little funny..
I dynoed the car with nitrous and I got 186 Horsepower and 325 Torque.. Yes, 325 of torque!
What is the deal with this? Without the nitrous I got 145 Horsepower and 190 Torque so my torque almost doubled and my horsepower increased by a mere 40?? Just doesn't seem right..
The car isn't running lean or rich with the nitrous and I have already sprayed a few dozen times with no ill effect whatsoever. The car definetly feels much much faster of course off the line and even in the top end and I can hang with LT1 Camaro z28's till about 80 but after that they tend to creep away.. Could somebody give me some insight as to why I'm gettting these numbers?
I think it may be because I'm not at 900PSI of bottle pressure as I don't have a gauge or a bottle warmer..

Bottle pressure will have no affect on the difference between numbers such as they are. Probably the dyno operator didn't set something up correctly to get an accurate torque reading, or they dyno'd in the wrong gear. This is not uncommon.

Well, we dynoed in 3rd gear from 3,000RPM which I thought was odd..
Does this sound right??

its best to unplug the elec conn then you are in 3rd automatically and dont have to worry about it downshifting, then you can run from 0 rpm to max...it does sound like it is in the wrong gear though, or they didnt calibrate the dyno right or setup

No, that should be the right way to do it. They probably set up something else wrong on the dyno. iirc there's a wire they clip on to a spark plug wire that reads the ignition pulses and has something to do with the dyno calculating torque. Sometimes they don't read well if you don't have good wires or if it's not clipped on well. They also should know that the GA uses a waste spark system (two plugs fire at same time for every combustion cycle).

Yea I don't think these guys were familiar with the grand am. I was of course the only 4 door sedan dynoing and of course everbody talking trash. We had a dyno barbecue where anyone can go and get thier car dynoed for 60 bucks. It usually costs 100 but it was a special deal type of thing. I'm pretty sure they didn't set stuff up properly because alot of cars kept loosing signal when they were running and they had just gotten that dyno machine so I don't think they had very much experience using it.

what kind of dyno was it? dynojet? mustang? dynapack?

How do you know that you're not running lean or rich on the street with it? You don't have a pressure gauge and I didn't see notice of either an EGT or AFR in your post. Nor have you said anything about reading your plugs. I would highly suggest that you obtain the correct monitoring equipment for your system. As for why your vehicle's hp number appears low, without a dyno graph thats pretty difficult to diagnose. Your nitrous could be disengaging through the shift, thats what would give you the torque spike and then no real hp difference. TQ and HP cross on a dyno at 5252rpm so prior to that rpm you will always have more TQ and after that you will have more HP, thats math. Your problem could be any number of things but you should get some of the simple monitoring devices to eliminate something breaking and causing a failure.
