i just polished mine and bought a new gasket. I had the same question as you but was skeptical on having to change it but once i got the old cover off to put the new one on i was happy i did. it was only like 9 bux for a pack of 2 at autozone and they had them in stock.
im sure i can get the part # if u want

make sure you put a little bit of time away for the removal +reinstall because there are coolent lines that make it tricky
in case u wanted the part number is VS 50442 R
made by fel-pro at autozone

They can be re-used if they aren't too old and you are careful when you remove them. The only difficult thing is they tend to expand a little after they've gotten hot so they don't fit back in the valve cover as well when you are trying to reinstall them. If they're cheap, just buy a new one. Also make sure you put some RTV sealer in the corner where the cylinder heads and lower intake manifold meet.
