Hey all, I am new to the forums and its great to be here. I've always loved the Grand AM GT's and I've finally decided to bite the bullet and purchase one. I know of 3 different '03 models that are in very similar condition and mileage (GM buybacks) but I can't seem to decide which colour to get. So i guess I would get opinions from those who know GAGT's better than anyone......owners themselves. Anyways the cars are Silver, Black, and White (I'm leaning towards the white because of the specialty rims) but the dealer said I could swap wheels with any of the other 2 if I like another colour. Your help is appreciated cause I can't make up my mind....Haha. Thanks in Advance

ps......if the mods could help me I don't know how to set up a poll. Thanks

Thanks, from looking around, the forum looks like alot of fun.

That said, if this thread is in the wrong forum, could one of the mods move it for me?....Thanks.

Black if your plans are to heavily mod the exterior. Im bias towards white because it seems to hold up better over time than the other color GA's Ive seen on the roads in CA. If you hate washing Silver /grey is the way to go then white, then black..

i vote black!! black can be a sexy color.. just have to keep it clean..

you're going to get a different answer from everyone.. in the end, it's still your choice.. search around the boards and cardomains for pics of what people have done to their GAs to get more of idea of what you could do with yours..

Yeah I hear ya.....I just wanted some input on what's the most popular from GA enthusiasts and some idea's for detailing. Methinks after thinking about it all day is that I'm going to go with white (my gf prefers that one too). It only has 71,000km/44K miles on it and its in mint shape. I found this pic on the internet of an identical one.

I'm going to pick it up next Wednesday and I'm already thinking about what I got planned for it. definately the first thing on the agenda is new taillights. I'm kinda leaning towards these ones but if anyone knows of some better ones on the market I'd love to hear about it.

are you aware of some of the common problems of the GA, some added to stuff to check out? like if the LIM has been replaced, and maybe check to see if the window regulators have been replaced. it looks like that might be an 03+ so it should have the updated lim gasket but i do believe those have failed before. just FYI.

Welcome. :)

Nice choice. Personally, I'm not a fan of aftermarket tails but if I had to choose a set for a white GT I'd go with black TYCs. If you plan on tinting the windows I'd just tint your stockers. I just did mine and I love the look over any aftermarket ones.

Thanks......I never knew that there were issues with the LIM gaskets and that is the first thing I'll ask him after Easter monday. When was this problem rectified and how do you find out if its a '03+

Thanks in advance........

yeah, if you search a bit you can find some info about the LIM. i think theres a sticky too. as for the year, you could ask him, heh. but IIRC, in 02.5 they didnt put the side badges on. like i said they changed it in 03. some people have had their GT's for awhile with no LIM issues and there have been people who have gotten lemons and replaced there LIM like 3 times. not to steer you away from the car, but since you havent bought it yet, just want to keep you informed.

Just get whichever has the fewest miles if you don't really care- Black looks good, but it will be a PITA to keep clean and scratch free as other have mentioned. I assume since you're in Canada you probably don't exactly have rainless and snow-less weather, so silver might be best.

I don't like Black GT's personally. One of the features that distinguishes GT from SE is the black trim line all around, but on a black GT, you really can't seen it. I like my Silver. It's easy to maintain. White is too plain to me.

I like the white, looks elegant as long as you don't put some corny body kit on it. And for the black line that goes around the GT, you can get a white overlay for that. To me white just looks better and flows a lot better.

White hands down. White is the best looking Grand Am color. Everytime I see a white 2 door GT on the road my heart sinks and I realize how much I miss my grand am :(

Here are some pics of the now deceased "White Lightning"

If you go with white you gotta go with the tinted windows on it too, looks bad @$$

Anyway the nice thing about White is it doesn't fade like other colors. It also makes the Grand am look bigger and more aggressive IMO.

As for problems, well I had a steering rack on mine mysteriously crack in 2. Also the window regulators fail alot, but thats an easy $50 fix off ebay. And of course the dreaded LIM gasket. The White Lightning was at 79,000 miles when she was totaled, so she never lived long enough to see the LIM gasket failure

Thanks alot for the input everyone. I'm definately going with white. I'll be picking the car up on Wednesday and I'll definately post some pics.

Bryan, I love those tails your using.......you've convinced me to go in the same direction. Also the white side mirrors look outstanding.

yeah the earlier GT's have those... twin post body color mirrors. If you get a new GT that has the "mickey mouse ear" mirrors, you can get the old twin post style mirrors off PFYC.com

Those are the sickest headlights I have ever seen on a ga. Are those still around??

I love my black beauty. By the way, I see someone say they like the black line around the trim that distinguishes the GTs from the SEs. On my car I just got 3 weeks ago, I have a silver line around the top. Is that standard? I don't see it on other people's GTs. Personally, I like it. Here is a pic:

those were custom and he was selling them, but i believe theyre sold.

atran-whoever said that was talking about the trim around the windows. SE's have a chrome trim GT's have black. what your talking about is a pin stripe. its not standard, but its not super rare.

If you have the means and know-how to take care of it, i say BLACK.

I personaly will never buy a light colored vehicle. IMO white, yellow, silver and some greys are boring as all hell.

In the end I decided to go with black. Here are some quick pics of it when I brought it home unwashed. I'll post some pics very soon after tinting, waxing, and a few other goodies are applied.:slim

Wow... my GA is at 176,000 miles and has never had a LIM problem... nor any engine or transmission problems at all... and I don't necessarily drive like a granny either :) Come to think of it, I've had almost no problems at all with the thing.

I must have gotten lucky hehe :D

SILVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! slightly biased ;D
